Starter motor blues

Hi, having spent a joyless day removing a starter from a 440 Turbo, we found the replacement did not mesh with the flywheel- on removal we found that it has 10 teeth as opposed to 9 of the original unit- on opening another new starter motor we found that it also has 10 teeth- the cog is 3mm wider. what is going on?
was a change in teeth count part of the plan or is the 1721 engine different?
Help!

Are you matching part numbers?

Hi, parts sold as compatible with that engine- aslso same with say Renault 21 and many others- the lucas part number lists 9, 10 teeth- do you have to specify? or will a 10 tooth work? I do not know what is wrong- i have replaced others with no problem- unless the turbo is a different flywheel???

Forget engines and car models.
I would only buy a part that is a compatible direct replacement with the old part and a good parts supplier will cross reference part numbers first.

Give them the old part number and they will give you the modern equivalent.

If that's done correctly, the fitment to the engine is a done deal.

Or send your original one off to be rebuilt and then you know it is the right one.
