DPF Regeneration Question
 

MY 2017 D2 Momentum edition (ie the "simple" shape exhaust system).

Every now and again after a short local trip, we stop the engine to hear the fan running full-tilt with an apparent smell of fuel about the car.

As there's no reason for the engine to be that hot, and no sign of fuel leaking, I suspect it is cooking the content of the particle filter, to clean it up. My old (MY 2010) D2 1.6L drivE only regenerated the DPF when the car was running at speed, so this would be new behavior.

Am I safe to say this is the regeneration cycle, so ignore it, or should I have the car checked over by the dealer to see if there's a problem?

You will get a warning message if there is anything wrong with the regeneration cycles , I believe it says in the owner manual you may get hot spells .

Thanks, Clan for looking at this topic. The MY17 manual simply says that the engine must be up to temperature and the regeneration cycle lasts up to 20 minutes. It mentions reduced power output, lowered fuel economy, and a smell of "burning" but nothing else. It does not anticipate the situation where the engine is stopped mid-regeneration cycle. But it still makes sense that the system would open the louvres and increase airflow to the DPF to assist the process. It had a motorway run recently so I'm not madly anxious about it.

If you stop in the middle of a regeneration it will carry on where it left off at the earliest opportunity , you don't need rpm or speed , just cruising along at 50 mph is ample ...

It's quite normal. Simply a regen, if there's a problem it will warn you, at which time take it for a longish drive to clean it out. I find twenty minutes at 2k rpm more than sufficient.
