122s mpg

I had a 222s many moons ago and loved it but cannot remember how much, and how often I put fuel in it. What kind of mpg will a well set up 122s 1964 model with overdrive get on regular trips of 16-20 miles, 15 of which are dual carriageway 60mph cruise? Is thinking 30mpg, maybe a wee bit more optimistic? I'm thinking of finding a decent solid Amazon and it would have to earn its keep, no point having a car at the door you can't afford to run though. Thanks in advance for any advice.

In my experience (with GAM) 30MPG would be wildly optimistic. I find that 20MPG is about right, but then I use the motor car mostly around town. GAM does have overdrive, but that doesn't get used much. With the type of use you suggest you might achieve 25MPG, but I don't think you would squeeze any more miles out of a gallon.

:-)

I drive a 1800S with an uprated B20 engine. I use my car enthusiastically, but not excessively so, on regular A and B roads, but little in town traffic.
My car averages between 25-26 mpg, almost always within this range.
I have driven it for 8years and it is almost always the same.

My ‘66 ,121 would do high twenties in the situation you describe. The tune is critical, I found ,like with most old motors, plugs, points, carb, air filter.

Mine, had no overdrive.👍

For some reason it's sticking in my head my old battle wagon got about 31mpg blatting along dual carriageways at 70ish in od top but my memory ain't what it was, hence the question!!

Simon got asked many years ago what our amazon estate did, his reply was he did not know it was just smiles per mile. I still don’t think he has worked it out 💙

My single Stromberg B20 tuned with a O2 wideband gets around 30mpg.

B20A with 4speed with mixed driving (no town use) typically 30MPG driven without consumption in mind.
B18B again 4 speed and same use about 27/28

Do you have any figures for the BW 35 automatic?

Not a problem with that George.I easily break 30mpg with my Amazon and it gets better on a real long run. Not sure how Othen is merely getting 20ish. When we went to Bruntingthorpe and Elvington I was breaking 42mpg. I was astonished and did my sums again. Even with my original Amazon without overdrive I usually got 32/33 mpg on a reasonable run. And I still have the figures to prove it.
