Petrol V8

Hi, For about the last four days when i stop the car after a drive, there is a strong smell of petrol, even when I've been running it on LPG. i have looked under the car and can't seen any leaks. i haven't removed the covers on the engine yet, although I've had a look around engine bay. I am new to the V8 no sure where to look. Any ideas would be appreciated. Thanks Ian

Obviously it might be any of a number of locations around the fuel system but don't discount the rear of the vehicle as the source. I recently had the flexible rubber section between the filler and the tank neck replaced because it had perished, which is apparently not uncommon on XC90's of this age.

Whilst in the later stages of its demise it was clearly apparent where the leak was, through the puddle forming on the garage forecourt during fueling, in hindsight I did recall getting a general whiff of petrol on exiting the vehicle a few times in the weeks preceding failure proper.

Thanks Moose, the smell seems to be coming from the back of the car, I'll have to find a way to get to the pipe. Ian

I'm afraid I can't help there as I didn't carry out the replacement myself. I recall reading posts somewhere to the effect that it was a PITA to do, so I farmed it out to my local Volvo specialist. Given the cost of that repair, I doubt that they had go to the lengths of dropping the rear subframe for access, so maybe it is at the very least visible in part from the wheel bay and/or underneath.

I will have a look when i get time. My worry is the LPG tank is in the wheel bay.
