V40 d4 purchase 5 cylinder or 4 cylinder?

Hi

new to forum as looking at getting back to Volvo ownership after years of Fords.

I've narrowed the my choice down to D4 V40 R Design and seen a couple of cars that appeal. Both cars are Volvo main dealer Volvo Selekt cars of similar spec.

One is 14 model with the older 5 cylinder 177 bhp engine with 1 yrs waranty remaining. The other is a 15 model with the new 4 cylinder 190 bhp engine with 2 yrs warranty remaining.

My initial thought was to spend the bit extra and go for the one with latest engine but reading some of the threads on here regarding egr and updated mapping problems has added some doubt.

Has anybody on here owned both variants? What are you views on the Pros and Cons of the car with 2 different engines?

Obviously the warranty should cover any initial problems i may encounter but i'm concerned the eventual fix may change the characteristics of how the car performs and possible long term effect it may have on re-sale values if it builds a bad reputation.

Thanks in advance

Bill

Far as I'm concerned, you cannot beat the 5 cylinder engines. Hence when buying my V60 recently, I decided to get the last of the 5 cylinders, rather than the new VEA (4 pot) engines.

Just my own personal preference mind you.

Own a D4 and driven one with the D5 lump in it.

Having owned two XC60's both with D5 engines I do miss the 5 cylinder noise
however the D4 is a better engine in every other way. I have had no issues with it over the past year of ownership

5 Pot - 5 Pot - 5 Pot

Simples

The new 4cyl D4 is the better engine, smoother more powerful and more economic.

The 5 cyl D4 is a proven workhorse, where as the D4 has its issues. If I was buying second hand it's a tough call, I'd probably get the 5cyl.

Always 5 cylinders.

5 cylinders is the only way here!

Hi Billy67, I have just listed my 4 cylinder D4 for sale on the forum, great car and have enjoyed the last 6 months with it but I came from a 3 litre straight 6 Alpina and miss it sorely, if you're looking for a used example just let me know?

Apologies to hijack your thread, I'm afraid I can't compare to the 5 cylinder variant but thought I'd let you know I'm selling mine.

Good luck with your choice!
