V40 2015 dual exhuast + damper installation
 
Hi guys (and girls..),
I've been driving a V50 for the last few years and was quite impressed with the build quality etc. So decided to modernize and buy a crashed V40 2.0 D2 as a summer project... well it might be cheaper than a summer holiday..;-) yep you guessed I'm having fun finding scrap parts, (but don't really think the quality has improved..:-( ) Okay enough of that...

Anyone got any experience of replacing a single exhaust pipe with a double tailpipe inc damper? I assume it's no problem to do this as I see 2.0 D2's with double pipes. How do you get the new one in without sawing it? Do you need to loosen the whole wheel/suspension subframe at the rear to get it in? I don't want to saw it in half and re-attach it! Looks like Volvo built the car around the exhaust pipe! Any hints would be appreciated!

Also do you know if you need to do anything with exhaust flow, P etc in the engine management after fitting a rear damper and double pipes?

I believe different floor pans are fitted according to whether the vehicle has a single or twin exhaust. If you purchase the load floor kit to accommodate a spare wheel, it comes with two floor assemblies, a raised floor for vehicles with a shallow wheel well and a wide floor panel that retains the existing floor level for vehicles with the deeper wheel well. I've always understood that this is due to the type of exhaust that was fitted and the available clearance under the floor as a result.

Fitting a double exhaust on a V40
 
Hi again,
Okay it's done. Double exhaust fitted and looks a lot nicer :-) Eventually just supported the back end of the car and took the subframe out, which b.t.w was pretty easy. (see Youtube video for: "Ford Focus Subframe Removal", almost identical to a V40). It's easier not to disconnect the brakes cylinders, just hang them up out of the way on the shocks = no brake bleeding.

Don't forget to fit new/larger insulation sheets above the rear damper and buy correct exhaust support rubbers so it's got clearance all around. Found a scrapyard R design rear diffuser and fitted a towing bar as I was busy in that area...


Having said this... it is possible to just cut the old exhaust on the straight section just forward of the subframe and connect it to a rear double piper which you cut off at the same place. Join them together with a sleeve/muff. Have fun!
