ABS sensor failure

May have been covered elsewhere but here are my trials with an ABS sensor on my XC60.
Had an alert about about ABS/DSTC service needed (also started alerting on City Driving/collision detection after a week of ignoring it)
Quick scan for codes showed failed right front ABS sensor.
Went to Amazon and bought a sensor for the front axel. Fail.
Apparently there are a few different types of hall effect sensors (sensors that detect a change in magnetic field) and I bought the wrong one, because the special one sends more info in some way .... its weird modern electronics that defies common sense.

My XC60 is 2010 and has done 186,000 miles so getting the old Sensor out was not very straight forward, long story short, put a small chisel through an aligned wheel bolt hole and cut the top off then drill out the remaining bit, there is no bottom to the hole the sensor fits in so the drill should go all the way. Fortunately the Torx screw was not welded in but it is a bit of a phaff to get something on to it as the brake disc back plate angles the drive somewhat, judicious downward pressure and a long slim Torx driver can assist.

For some reason the right front always seems to go, least that is the one mentioned in the you tube videos.

Here are the relevant part numbers, for the left one, these depend on what features you have like Collision detection/city driving, and don't ask me went all the code mean as I have no idea, this is a copy and paste from Vida, taking the old one out first may be the best way to get the numbers.
I bought a Frankburg version from Amazon for £18 which seems better value than £150 for a Volvo part and made the alert go away.

Sensor, left 1.00 30748149 EXC Variant code: VP05

Hi all! Just adding a note on this thread that hopefully will prevent the palaver I’ve had with ABS sensors.

Had similar issues to the OP, with Front Right being reported by my diagnostic box as failed. Quick look on GSF and Euro Car Parts showed several options, ranging from £27 to £66.
GSF showed one sensor, common LHS and RHS, at £27
ECP had two options. One was again common LHS and RHS at £45 and another one, which was specifically RH at £66.

Obviously I started with the GSF one, but once fitted there was still a problem and my iCarSoft diag said “Right Front Wheel Speed Sensor. System Internal Failures. Incorrect Component Installed”…

So next I tried the £45 one from ECP. But had the same error. I then saw this thread and thought OK, I’ll get the Frankburg one off Amazon at £15.

However, same problem!

Lastly, it was time for the £66 one from ECP, which worked perfectly!

In hindsight, the original faulty one was a light beige colour, and all the others I tried were black, apart from the £66 one which was also light beige. Usually with replacement parts the colours aren’t important, however in this case it sure is.

My XC60 is a 2014 high spec one with ACC, which might be the reason why the front right sensor is different but it seems mad that just that sensor is unique.

Fortunately got full refunds from GSF and ECP, so the £66 is a little easier to stomach.

Hope this helps others avoid this situation.
