240 glt to save from scrap

Does anyone want to save a 240 auto estate 1992 se/glt with blue interior, fr elect windows, b19 nasp engine, catalyser version, injection.

Its been stood at least 10 years, maybe much longer, it needs a fuel pump t start, I will probably try and get it running if deemed worth saving.
It ran well before, mileage around 110-125k, will check.

Very solid underneath with only a small 50p hole in sill at rear, dead easy repair.
The arches are starting to go, not bad atm but at that point where now is a good time to step in before it rots the inner arch.

Interior good.
NS of car is the let down, paint on nsf door shot, if you could find a door in same blue colour I'd hang a door then paint the entire side.
Previous blow in on nsr door. But I think the whole side has seen paint before.
Headlamp reflectors gone, tail lamp broken ns. tbh, I'd replace most the plastic lenses and fit new reflectors in headlamps because they're cheap enough to do.

Steel 14" rims with all 4 volvo trims.

It will need 4 new tyres, 14" and new discs/pads if your doing the job properly, personally I'd buy a calliper rebuild kit and do each calliper also just because I believe that if a jobs worth doing....

It has Chrome roof bars making it look very much like a funeral car at first glance lol.

I bought this as part of 3 volvo's that I've acquired, all have stood many years.
There is also a 480 coupe which I'm hoping will be saved, solid underneath but arches shot, only 25k auto turbo.
A 940 in blackberry, 170 turbo auto black leather 1992, I really like this one and may keep myself but I'll make good first whatever happens.

All of these cars are in Brittany France, 1 hour from St Malo port. Log books to be applied for for the 240, I'm applying for the 940 for myself, its only £25.

I will get pictures and post up somewhere.

Given the rising prices of 240's I'm really hoping someone will want to save this, I spoke to a trader I know who has a 240 up for 10 or 11k, now this is not anywhere near that value and wouldn't be without a lot of work albeit most of the work is DIY works.

My fall back plan was to chop the cats off and weigh these in, alloys separate, shell, pull off a few valuable parts to sell and try to break even had they turned out to rot boxes.
I would sooner see them all saved because that's my mentality, I prefer to save than break.
I don't want much for it, it will need collecting on a trailer and fairly soon.
I may be able to assist a little as I have a trailer here in Brittany but I don't have the time to be delivery nor driving the UK.
Brittany Ferries for a sprinter van with trailer to get this thing home is around £300 each way just to give anyone a heads up, if you pay someone to ship fr you then you'll be looking at 1k min usually.
The cost to get it to the UK makes it difficult to justify the project if your looking to make a quick buck, hence it being more ideal for someone looking for a solid base for a project with long term ownership whilst benefiting frm the rising values.

Would I be right in thinking you are giving away the 1992 240 free of charge if someone collects it from France?

Nice idea but doesn't sound viable to me!

Unfortunately I have to agree Andrew.

I'm guessing the 240 is a RHD motor car, so it has no value aside from scrap in France. Furthermore I'm assuming the owner is giving the 240 away free of charge in the hope someone will save it, which is magnanimous of him.

If the car was in England it might be worth £300 for scrap, or perhaps £500 if someone was willing to take on a huge risk (unused for over a decade, the normal rusty rear end, in need of lots and with no title) - but it isn't, it is in France and realistically would cost a grand to recover. Even if the motor car was in a remote part of the UK I don't think it would be recovering.

So, sadly I have to agree, it is a nice idea of the owner to give it away on the off chance that someone might take it on, but I think that pretty unlikely amongst our community.

:-(

Oh I see - so you are selling it, not offering it FOC.

Please see above, I think our posts crossed in the post. I wish I could say otherwise because we never like to see 240s die, but it is hard to imagine the motor car has any value except scrap in France.

I'll send it to scrap, shame because its really solid underneath, probably more so than most but if they are only 500quid for a solid one in the UK then it makes no sense to recover it.
Whilst there is some paperwork with it one would have to stump up the £25 V62 V5 cost, but there's not full detailed history and awards for best presented car at shows or anything like that which makes these super valuable, so it will never be a 10k car imo.

Looking at this its pretty basic, I can't see anything valuable worth pulling off to sell and I guess because it was built a basic car there is nothing worth pulling off before it goes to the crusher?

Thanks all.

I'm so sorry not to be the bearer of good news. We all hate seeing 240s die, but I really can't see this one is worth recovering.

Here is a similar motor car on eBay here in the UK:

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/185112215...53.m1438.l2649

... it is a bit rough, but has a title, a long MoT, the correct alloy wheels and is a driver. I'll be a bit surprised if bidding gets much over a grand, but why not watch the auction (another 6 days) to give yourself an idea what your motor car might be worth as a runner with a title, MoT and the right wheels - then subtract a grand for shipping and it will tell you what your motor car is worth?

Very sadly I have to agree with you. There is nothing you could do to this car that would ever make it worth £10,000, even if you fixed all the faults, got it resprayed, shipped it to the UK and got it MoT tested with a title it would probably only make £3,000.

You mentioned stripping parts off the car to sell. If you have the time and space, plus you are able to get the parts back to UK you could break it for spares. There is a chap doing exactly that on this forum:

https://www.volvoforums.org.uk/showthread.php?t=319584

... as you may see from the thread, it is quite an involved process.

If you decided to do that I can't help thinking you might be better off advertising the spares in France because the shipping costs to the UK would probably be prohibitive. Why not try French eBay - advertise it as all parts available (more or less true). It depends on your circumstances as to whether you have the time, space and inclination to do that.

Good fortune,

Alan

Put some photos up. You never know, someone might be interested. A couple of projects / spares/repairs cars have sold recently for £800 / £900.

Absolutely yes. One never know, there might just be someone willing to take it on. I wish I could give the OP an optimistic view.
