Intermittent Non-Starter

Hi,

I have a 2005 V50 2.0D. It’s done 66,000 miles. Recently it’s been very slightly slow to start (new battery/new glow plugs) no fix. Starter motor turns it well.
Further to that, sometimes, only when cold 1 in 10 times it won’t start for a while requiring 30s or more of cranking before it slowly jumps to life nearly flattening the new battery!

Oddly no associated Fault-codes. DTC clear.

Local garage can’t fix as when it with them… Of course it starts ok.

Is anyone able to suggest a solution?

Sticking throttle body

Hi TeaselGee

That really sounds like the throttle body. Pull the big air pipe off front of engine. Give it a clean with carb or egr cleaner. It'll be filthy. Make sure not to overtighten the clamp when putting pipe on as this can misshape the throttle body housing causing same problem. When you have time take the body off and rub down the edge of the flap with sandpaper to stop it sticking in future. Only 3 torx screws hold it. Bottom ones a bit of a pain. Before I fixed mine, one evening had to crank it 14 times to get it to go. No problems now, I bought a second one from eBay so just swap every six months so as to give a good clean.

Cheers

When it does start do you get a big puff of smoke from the exhaust? If so check throttle body if not likely sticking fuel pressure regulator or air leaking into the fuel system. Is it more likely to have the issue if the car is left unused for a longer period of time?
