GDI Experiment
Hi guys im gonna do a little experiment to see what my GDI really use's MPG wise and also to see what the difference's are between different fuel brands and ron numbers.
Would be cool if other x40 owners could do the same so we could compaire results, one of each engine size and type would be cool. I plan on doing 2 full tanks from each company and each ron value so we get a good base figure to work from. I am also testing to see if the computers guess is close or spot on, i do a full reset on the computer after a complete fill so we can also see what the computer recons on average MPH and MPG So here is the start 23rd Feb 2012 53 Plate Volvo V40 1.8I GDI Vehicle Mileage : 113480 Fuel : Shell Fuel Saver Unleaded 95 Ron Pence Per Litre : 134.9 Litres 57.82 Spend : £78.00 Predicted Range : 335m Average MPH : - Average MPG : - Miles Covered Since Last Fill : - Actual MPG : Hope this works out |
If it helps...I did 470 ish miles on mine, Tesco 95 ron, 40mpg average (400 miles of motorway driving, rest in bloody traffic!), fuel light on, reading 30 miles left.

Here's mine from last August:
http://volvoforums.org.uk/showthread.php?t=132623 I'll be conducting another in the next week or two, this time with a new ECTS, MAFS, full premium service + Italian tune-up and possibly a new clutch kit. :) You should include in your test where it was driven, how it was driven, how many miles on average covered from engine start to stop (short/long distances) Quite a few drivers have a commute of 5 miles to work, and the same 5 miles back which just about allows the engine to get to its optimal running temperature but then is turned off for the rest of the day. Make a mental note of the average RPM’s and which gears you stuck to the most. Also, if you mention town driving, be a little specific. It's annoying when someone tells you they average 30mpg in town yet you'd be lucky to see 20 yourself which leaves you wondering (like me!!) My "town" is in London, which falls right into the ‘2mph at all times’ zone. :D Happy Experimenting! (albeit boring of course!) |
Its all going to be mixed driving, i dont commute so only use the car when i need to go out, the only run i do reqular is to tesco's and back and thats only 2 miles lol, its not a perfect experiment i know but it gives a good ball park. im intrested more to see if one brand of fuel out performs another and weather it really is worth going for higher octaine fuel.

Gonna throw a spanner in the works
1999 on a T Plate Volvo S40 1.9 T4 (Lpg) Vehicle Mileage : 112213 Fuel : Sainsburys Auto Gas Pence Per Litre : 0.729p Litres 46.69 (just above red) Spend : £34.04 Predicted Range : N/A Average MPH : - Average MPG : - Miles Covered Since Last Fill : - Actual MPG : |
I was averaging around 30-38mpg with Tesco unleaded driving just over 17miles each way 5days per week.
18GDI V40,5miles of A road,12miles of M8 usually do 40-50mph on A road,70-75mph on M8(if its clear) But I am new to the car,and I just had it given a full service now I'm getting 38-44mpg so no complaints here. Got just under a full tank in her atm,but its a mix of BP ultimate, and Tesco unleaded.I'm expecting it will get slightly better when I get the anti-roll bar sorted. |

2nd fill up with shell fuel saver unleaded, mpg is a little lower than i expected, Mainly town driving, no motor way. Clutch was changed between this and the last fill up, ECU was reset so possible reason for poor fuel eco.
