Jacking and axle stand positions
 

Avo all v70d5 sport 185 07. I need to replace front struts so I need a sensible location to raise the front and place axle stands. I can see a triangle piece behind front wheels to place axle stand but can put jack in same place. The points for the scissor jack look a bit dodgy to use with a trolley jack plus I have the side skirts. Some some say use cross member some dont.
Could someone point me in the right direction please.

I usually jack on those metal plates you mentioned (if you mean the rear subframe mounts) and then put my axle stands under the front subframe rails (about 1/2 way between the two wishbone mounts if it makes any difference) it's very sturdy never been an issue

you can lift it in the middle at the front but there is the slight risk of movement / slippage / punching a massive hole in the bottom of your radiator. I tend to avoid that at the loss of about 2-3 mins extra effort

chocks behind your rear wheels as well don't forget

you may not need the instructional but check out how he uses a pry bar at 9:10 to line up the bolts

I jack under the front subframe with a block of wood in between. By chance I got a piece of wood that's the exact width of the subframe. I've become comfortable with this approach now.

Axle stands go under the "triangle pieces"; I try to align mine so the big subframe bolt sits nicely in the axle stand.

I think that with a large jack saddle you could jack under the subframe cross member without the wood but it doesn't seem many people do. There's a circular depression in the middle and it is mentioned, in vague language, in the handbook. My car's got a few surface scrapes around that depression so I think it's been jacked directly from it in the past.

You can definitely jack from the side mounts (scissor jack points) with a trolley jack too. I've done this several times now. Be wary that the front jacking point will lift the rear wheel as well - the whole side lifts because they're so close together.

That one definitely made me swear a lot, only upside was it made me finally replace the leaking intercooler :shocked:

This came as a surprise to me while lifting our V70 this week. It's quite a big lift to get an axle stand in place.

use a decent jack and some wood on the front subframe - dont attempt if you have one of those 2inch pad trolley jacks
