V50 2.0d Won’t Start
 

Hello.

Apologies for asking what may seem a silly question but I’ve accidentally done a bad thing.

My son has just bought (today) a 2009 V50 2.0d manual. Lovely car and well looked after.

I’ve just tried starting it on our drive. My fault but I forgot to take it out of gear when starting. It jerked under load from being in 1st and with the handbrake on for a split second and I immediately switched off.

Now the starter won’t work. Laughable but I’m hugely embarrassed plus shortly to face my son’s rancour when he gets home later.

I’ve disconnected the battery but that’s not helped. I’ve locked and unlocked. I rocked it very gently in reverse just in case the starter was stuck, but nothing.

I’ve not yet tried a jump-starter as I couldn’t find the one we have. Typical!

I’m desperate to give him some element of a solution before he returns from work.

Any sage advice, other than to immediately emigrate and assume a false identity?

check starter fuses and the fuseable links check if you have power to the starter with a multi meter

Starter motor fuse number 13 ( 30 amp ) under the bonnet.

Fortunately, I did not have to emigrate and my son took the initial news very well.

You were correct. After initially suspecting the previous owner had fitted a chocolate starter motor, we examined further in-line with your comments and did indeed find a blown fuse.

All my son has to do now is to wait until Friday for his insurance to commence so he can drive the thing.

By delaying the insurance start-date by a week, he’s saved himself £200 on his yearly premium (he’s 18, by the way) which, by his own man-maths logic, will pay for most of the V50’s 17” alloys to be refurbished. Or a nice R-Design steering wheel. Or a thorough check and service by our local Volvo specialist.
