Clutch Noise??

Hi

When my v70 went in for a service last month they commented that there was a slight noise from the clutch release bearing.
In the last couple of days I've noticed a noise when driving that sounds like a bearing whining all the time the car is moving. If I press the clutch in the noise stops but all the time it is released whether in neutral or in gear the noise is there. Some times it disappears and comes back again a bit later. If I press the clutch peddle a small amount, say half inch, the noise stops.

Is this likely to be the clutch bearing? If it is how easy and expensive to fix? The wife is due to give birth in 3 weeks and finished work today so would ideally not like to be paying out for new clutch and fly wheel etc. I've already got to change the rear discs pads and shoes in the next few weeks.

Car is a 06 reg D5 with 92k. My old D5 was on 193k when I sold it with the old clutch still going strong so I hope this one isn't on the way out already.

Given your current circumstances, I would bleed the clutch and run fresh fluid through it because it's such an easy starting point and may well help.
Even investigating it properly for a diagnosis could cost a few quid so try the cheap fix first.
92k is early for any real clutch problems if it's been driven right.

The clutch release bearing is only engaged when the clutch pedal is depressed. With the clutch engaged and the car in gear, there should be no noise from the bearing (it's disengaged). Any noise under these circumstances would usually be from the gearbox or final drive. Noise that disappears when the clutch pedal is depressed used to mean that the gearbox layshaft bearings may be noisy - don't know how significant that is for the Volvo gearbox. Maybe check / change the gearbox lube?

It's didn't do it today!

I'll check gearbox and clutch fluids next week when I've got a few days off work.

I would be very surprised if you had a gearbox problem, these Volvo boxes are bomb proof unless it is leaking fluid and the noise is a result of wear. If you change the fluid make sure you use the Volvo stuff. The level plug is just behind the wheel, easy to see once off.
