tyres steel wheels 5.5 x 15 P1800E
 

Hi, im getting and reading conflicting info on this so was hoping i could get some feedback from someone who has actually done this. Im fitting some wide steel 5.5 x 15 wheels onto my 71 P1800E, i want a wide stance so looking to see what the widest tyres are that will fit these rims and work on a P1800E. read up info on various sizes but these seem to be from people fitting to an amazon rather than a p1800E. Therefore anyone who has fitted 5.5 x 15 onto a P1800E what are the largest tyres you have fitted without rubbing or clearance issues.

Late bolt circle of the 1800E (5 X 4.25 = 5 X 108 mm) has fewer wheel options than the earlier (different!) bolt circle, and in order to not change gearing or result in Speedometer error, you should maintain Overall Diameter (Circumference) of whatever tire you install, to the original.

I fitted wide steels to my amazon recently and used a 195/65/15 tyre. Even lowered 100mm I get no tyre rubbing. I could probably have fitted a 205 wide tyre or a 70 profile if I wanted more 'chunk'.

You should not have any problems w/5.5" wide rims and tires unless the wheels have way to much offset or backspacing.

1800S, 1800E, and ES cars can accommodate up to 8" wide rims and 205 wide tires with no rubbing if the rims have the correct backspacing and offset. Two other things to look out for is check that the springs have not sagged to much due to age, or if it has been lowered excessively.

Thanks for the reply I'm looking at my local tyre supplier and there are 205 65 15 and 205 60 15 does it matter what ones?

205's will work best on 6-7" rims. 205/65 will give you a larger than standard rolling diameter which will affect your speedo. 205/60 will be close to standard but will give a harder ride due to the shorter side walls. No real need to go further than 195/65 and even these suit a 6" rim better than a 5 1/2" one.
Remember that the 1800E with its disc brake axle uses the later PCD. Does mean that you can fit any 200/700/900 wheels up to the very last 900 ones when they changed to FWD offsets. You're then spoilt for choice for size and style. Prices can be good too.

Well i finally got the tyres and steel wheels fitted you can see the before and after on the attached photos, got them off simon at brookhouse as used ones super cheap ... needed a little work but super pleased how they turned out .... new wheels and tyres handle way better and i have'nt got my heart in my mouth anymore that the original split rims are going to separate every time i take a corner !! !!
went for 205 60 15, steering doesnt feel any heavier and really pleased with the look, and can go into corners way more aggresively now.
