Software update

Today is the day I hand back my company V90 D4 R Design and retire!

I have bought a 2016 XC60 R Design Lux Nav D4 (2wd) from a Volvo specialist which is great but I am not sure when the software was updated last.

The specialist rather dismissed the concept of software updates as a main delay ploy which doesn’t really do anything, but this may have been because he did not have the connection or kit to do it.

I know that many of the updates are more concerned with drivability, gearbox and engine management.

Is there anywhere that I can find a list of the updates which could be applied to my car and what changes they made?

Can I pay a one off fee (how much) to a Volvo dealer to be brought up to date?
Thanks in advance.

Your best bet would be to call official Volvo garage to have your car hooked up. Then they'll know exactly what SW versions are installed and what (if any) new ones are available.

It will cost something, but I wouldn't know how much, since I do all my regular (annual) services at official garage and they do this SW update while changing oil and stuff and never charge me anything for it (at least there's no price on the bill, there is listing of "software update xxydyx" but no price to it.

In UK the annual service includes all necessary software updates with NO EXTRA CHARGE .( map updates excluded )

Last year I asked Volvo Cardiff the cost for a one-off software and they quoted £60. They’ve since lost the franchise and another has opened but I haven’t had an updated quote. With inflation, they probably want £160 now….

Out of interest are there actually any recent updates for older cars? My 2012 S60 hasn’t seen a main dealer since 2019, I assume there can’t be many updates to discontinued models?

They should charge 18 minutes labour time for a software download .

I just called the new Cardiff Volvo dealer (Mon?) and they quoted £50 incl. vat. Is this correct at the appropriate labour rate?

I would jump at it at that price.

So if it is £50-£70 does that install all updates?
Is there anywhere where I can see what the updates have been?
The car will have been main dealer serviced for the first 3 years or so, and if there are no significant updates on a 2016 D4 4 cyl since, say 2019, it is probably a waste of time and money.

Yes you get the same package they do on every service and every used car sold . Updates are issued on a monthly basis so very worthwhile to leave the dealer with them all current . No, what's included is not published in UK but they could tell you which modules have been updated if you were interested and if they can be bothered to jot down the 30+ or so modules that may have been updated . .
