Should I buy a 93k V70?
I'm viewing a '14 plate D4 SE (163bhp) tomorrow which seems well looked after and advertised at a reasonable price.
Perhaps the main downside is that the mileage is fairly high (although not crazy) at 93k. Think it's worth buying a V70 with this kind of mileage? Anything that I should look out for that needs changed, timing belts etc? The MOT's have been good but most recent one had an advisory for 'front outer drive shaft joint constant velocity boot severely deterioriated'. Having looked this up the boots cost about £25 with perhaps £150 of labour. Other than that it seems straight aside from a couple of scratches. Any guidance appreciated! |

But it's 8 years old so check it carefully and go for a good test drive. If you buy it - I would get the gearbox fluid changed if it is an auto/geartronic, and I'd do the timing belt as well if it hasn't been done for peace of mind (recommended interval is 10 years/108k miles). |

As others have indicated, 93k is nothing for a V70, and the 5-cylinder D4 engine is a very nice engine.
I would expect the car to drive very nicely if it's in good order. Is it a private or trade sale? |

I think on average (no promises) but 93k will have shown little stresses to even bearings, bushes and other semi-consumables. If it has a full history I would be very confident with that. Just remember it’s run it’s design life now (nearly!) so change all the fluids including coolant and power steering etc etc then it should easily do the same again. |
200,000 miles is not unusual on the big five pot engine. My wife’s car is now 12 years old and just short-800 miles- of 200,000. Just started to have jiggly issues- fuel pump/ fuel pump wiring- but the car is still managing 400 miles in a weekend comfortably and carried a two metre dining table and eight chairs for my daughter last week. Not many other cars will do that.

I know it's not a d4, but I didn't think twice about buying my 169k d5.
As long as there's documented service history, you're good. I bleat on about my problems I've has with mine, probably because it's self inflicted (apart from the gearbox, which I'm blaming the garage fitting the clutch for). Mileage is nothing. Previous volvo I bought with 297,000 on it, saw it past 310,000 before selling it on. Its still living, 940's never die, especially d24tic' s. |
Good question! We bought our V70, a late 2007 early P3 D5, in February as complete Volvo virgins. At nearly 15 years old, and 116k on the clock we weren't expecting perfection, and bought on the strength of a little bit of research on this forum, strong dealer service history, and generally good nick inside and out. We love it, and followed the advice of Tannaton and others in getting the gearbox oil changed.
I think I'd have been seriously interested in the car you're looking at - just didn't have that sort of money for a second car. Good luck! |
