2003 S60 Auto Transmission - Intermittent fault

During our Scotland holiday this year I have experienced a repeat of a previous very intermittent gearbox issue.

When the fault occurred the gearbox made a horrible clunk when switching between Drive and reverse and I also noticed I had no kickdown functionality while driving.

VIDA is reporting error code TCM0039 - Gear-Shift position sensor Faulty signal.

Turning ignition off and back on again and everything returns to normal with no clunks and normal gear changing.

the car has presently covered 147K miles and has had regular full fluid changes ( every 40K) during my ownership. There is presently 10K left before the next one is due. Fluid is nice and red and car does not do any major towing, although there has been a lot of motorway work over the last 12 months or so.

Has anybody else experienced this issue and if so did it require the switch assembly to be replaced or is it a part that can be removed and cleaned etc ?

Hi.

This vid will give you an idea of the fix to this problem.
Take a note of the comments made by others as the switch is adjustable and needs to be set correctly .
I seem to remember that there are alignment marks .
As your problem seems to be intermittant it could be just the pins in the connector . Check to make sure they aren`t pushed back or dirty.
The sensor may be starting to fail but i think you would have had this happening more often .
Cheers.

Tks for the informative response, I have watched the fitting video and it is very straightforward. I may initially disconnect the electrical connector and give it a liberal squirt of switch cleaner to see if I get a further occurrence of the issue before I go shelling out for a new PNP.
