Is it worth it??
 
Hi all .... back after an 8 year break!!

I'm looking at a 99' MOB T5 Petrol Auto
Lots of miles as expexted, spanking condition. £1600
I've owned various V70's over the years so no all the ins and outs etc.
Never a T5 though. Can anyone give me any pointers and most of all ... is it worth it??

It depends whether its full of neglect and bodges really , 20 years is a massive history ....and it will use a lot of fuel ....:angel_smile:

As Clan says, it depends.

Value is in the eye of the beholder and someone's pride and joy can be someone else's shed.

My V70 T5 replaced a 740 Turbo as I like the image vs performance that gives a great load lugger which is able to get a shift on when necessary. I don't do that much mileage these days so fuel consumption is not a major consideration for me, so I can't comment on running costs.

You don't say what mileage it has under its belt and really this is not such an issue on old Volvos (as you probably already know) as condition and history are the main factors.

As long as you are happy with spending whatever amount you set yourself (or what is set for you by your Domestic Chief Financial Officer, LOL) to get the specification you are looking for and are prepared for the usual jobs that will inevitably arise then consider the asking price as a starting point for negotiation.

Some one obviously thought it was worth it.

Have been looking at Volvos on Autotrader during the past week (not for me but a family member) and noticed there were dealers listing 850s and early V70s as rare classic cars with very optimistic asking prices, so maybe now the weather is getting warmer and travel is becoming less restricted, prices will creep up?

The way I bought my V70 was to watch ebay for a couple of months to see what was out there and what sold for how much to see what they were worth, then when I saw the one I bought I was sure it was worth the asking price and hit the buy button before anyone else. Some cars are worth more to some people for their own reasons, if you and someone else have to have a particular colour or spec then it gets silly but if you're reasonably flexible there will be another car along soon.

Yes, I'll never really understand these 'How long is a piece of string' threads. Every single-marque forum carries these.
I've two, one's a complete shed, I'll tell you it's worth £1800, but you'd be unwise to give me £400. The other for my own reasons, you'd not prise from me for £7-8000.

The better go-faster 'R' variants fetch £10-15K. Are they worth this? Apparently so. And £68 million for a Belgravia / Manhattan address is a price people queue-up to pay.

Find a P80 with everything done, all the usual issues sorted, and in my mind, it carries a £2-3000 premium. If verified, I'd happily pay £4-5000 for such a car, whereas very respectable cooking-grade cars can be had for under a £1000.

As Dave points out, there's always be another one along soon....

Thus the market has spoken, you'll need to pay somewhere between £400 and £15,000.

As CNG says, it depends upon the buyer.

I paid £3k for my '97 S70 T5 manual a year ago. I've spent a fair bit on it and cleaned it to death, but I'll still only be looking for £3k when I sell it in a month or two. I reckon that is a very reasonable price for such a good car.

I've recently bought a Jap import 850R for £9k. That is serious money for a 25 year old Volvo. However I paid it as I intend to keep the car for a long time, and so wanted the best available. As it happens I reckon its worth a £k or so less than I paid due to quite a few minor, but annoying and potentially expensive issues. Nevertheless, I wouldn't sell it for less than £10k now, and once I've sorted all the issues and done the usual stage 0 tune up... well it'd have to be significant enough for me to get another of my bucket list cars instead! Would anyone else have paid £9k for it? Who knows - you just need one person willing to pay it, and that becomes its market value.

So in conclusuon, I'd say that if you think the car you are looking at is a good one, and the price isn't extortionate, then grab it as the good ones will be snapped up quickly. Just remember to keep a chunk of money in reserve as any car this old will need some repairs.

Completely right. When some idiot shouts "It's not worth that" when it clearly is, I'm left perplexed. Artworks go under the hammer for £90 million, why? Because somebody paid it.

In RT's case, he reckons he's overpaid by £1-2K? So be it. Yet when this example is the car he thought he was buying, ie at Stage 1, it'll be worth £10ishK all day long. And here's the good bit. It's an 850R for chrissakes, if it's bright, without too much effort, there's always another ready to stump for it.

Compare that to walking into today's dealership with 10K, and see how that holds in 2-3 years? With depreciation the larger cost, my money says, long-game today's £1-2K over-payment soon looks very wise.

Compared to how most buy cars, the thing will hold its price. This kinda' makes for near free motoring. It's an 850R for chrissakes.

I said, "you'd not prise from me for £7-8000". Like RT's 10K figure, you really would have to pay me £7-8000 or more to get it from me. In truth it's not worth that, yet it's a known quantity, thus worth that to me. Because to find its match would cost me time, this before we even think in terms of money? And I can't find the arsedness to do it all again. Which I suspect is the same place RT gets his notional 10K from.

Done right, with thought - £9-10K for a 25 year old car is not dim at all, it's cheap motoring.

I have a 1999 v70R it is very uneconomical it's not standard to give you an idea I also drive Merc E63 AMG 6.2 V8 and I think it's better on fuel than the V70R someone might have a standard one on here maybe there a lot better standard
