Volvo alloys
I'm sure this has been asked many times but I couldn't find a thread when searching - what are the options for replacing the steelies on my 940? (K-reg, SE, 2.0 NA)
I see mentions of Pentas and Aurigas and Polaris and the like. Whilst I quite like the steelies given that the car is soon to be strong mechanically it might be time to do a bit of work on how it looks. OEM Volvo preferred, I really don't want to disappear down the BBS/Compomotive/Momo rabbit hole. |
Following with interest, as I would like to upgrade my alloys to something a little larger.....
There is much online regarding the fitment of 5x108 stud pattern - which is common to Peugeot, Jaguar, Ford's etc - but nothing set in stone as to what will actually fit... PS, if anyone knows what these wheels are called could someone tell me ( along with the paint code... :tongwink: ) [https://i.ibb.co/M55wJ8Y/IMG-20211027-113700696.jpg Thank you. |
I’m looking to switch from alloys to steelies but never see any 740/940 ones for sale.
Reading online you can fit other Volvo alloys that have 5x108, but will need to have the same centre bore of 65.1. Also the front wheel drive wheels will need spacers for the front. I believe some Ford, Peugeot, Citroen wheels will fit. |
The original options catalogue will give you a good idea what wheels are available
https://accessories.volvocars.com/Le...R_GB_NL_DE.pdf Mostly you’re looking at 15 or 16 inch for the 940 with 16 a bit rarer and more sought after. The wheel pictured above is Auriga 16 x 6.5. Probably paint code 931, dark silver. They were standard on the CD spec estate and are arguably the most common 16 inch OEM wheel for the 940. My favourite is Galaxies. These were fitted on the Sport model estate. They are very sought after but not super rare. There is a set on eBay at the moment, perhaps a tad overpriced. Some of the 16 inch alloys need the special chromed wheel nuts. These might be a bit hard to find if they don’t come with the wheels. The 940 and early 960 use a different offset from later 960s and front wheel drive cars. This might limit your choice unless you’re prepared to use spacers. |
Aurigas are my favourite original wheel and look the best I think. Galaxies are a lot of money for a wheel which doesn't have much dish and just looks like a slightly bigger Adhara.
If you want dish get some ocean mk18s. The Hydra alloys also look really good but again fetch silly money. |
If you wanted to try something quite cheap and cheerful - but I think still look fine, you might try Volvo Pholus. I bought a set (from 360beast - above) that would have come from a 940 for £30, they cost £30 worth of materials and about probably 12 hours work (spread over a week). I use then for my 244's winter tyres, in my humble opinion they look smart and suit the motor car:
https://www.volvoforums.org.uk/showp...postcount=2076 ... they are 15" (probably the same as your steel wheels?). Just an idea - perhaps they suit a 244 better than a 940? Alan |
I beg to differ.

Somehow this post got duplicated below - so I've deleted this one.

https://i.imgur.com/O8birCDh.jpg ... I do think the Pholus wheels look pretty cool on the RB in its winter outfit as well though: https://i.imgur.com/yvlObUsh.jpg I think I'm fortunate in that I like both sets of wheels - and they both suit the RB well. Alan |

Doing some research at the moment, and seems like there is lots of options out there. |
