XC60 2012 selector jerks on D after oil change

You did help me many times so far so i hope you might be able to advise me this time as well.
Gearbox oil in my volvo xc60 2012 D5 215hrs 155k miles has just been changed (drain and refill) and the car drives and changes gears smooth.
Its not known if the gearbox oil has ever been changed as it was very black but did not smell burned.

After oil change there is significant jerking (quite a lot bigger than before) when selecting to driving D position.

1. Shall i do adaptation of the gearbox?
2. can adaptation be done only by a specialist or would Volvo Vida software do it?

Is the level correct?

With that mileage I would do multiple drain and refills

i just did the first drain and refill and the next one i am planning after 1k miles
it total there should be 3 or 4 drains if i remember correctly
bit worried about jerking if its not detrimental to the gearbox - ideally i would like to do adaptaption of the gearbox after the last drain and refill

Did you reset the fluid level using VIDA & reset the transmission fluid counter? This lets the TCM know the fluid is at the right capacity & resetting the fluid counter tells it that its got new fluid.

Underneath the transmission, there’s a drain plug that has two parts. To reset the level, you need VIDA & the fluid needs to be at a certain temperature (50 degrees minimum). Then you get underneath, open the smaller part of the plug & you should see fluid coming out. When it stops, put the small plug back in & the level is reset.

Resetting adaptions may help. I’m not sure if that can be done by yourself though.

You can also use the Car Scanner app to show gearbox oil temperature.

BTW it's not "at least 50C" it's got to be within a range of 50C - 60C from memory and the level must be set correctly with the engine running

Yes, that's correct.

To the original poster, another thing worth noting is software updates. You'll have to visit a dealer for this, or an independent Volvo garage that has the facility to install potential updates to the transmission. A simple software update (if the transmission needs one) could stop the jerking sensation you're experiencing.

The only thing is, you won't know whether it needs a software update or not without the dealer/garage plugging diagnostics in (costs around £70), but you'll have to pay regardless of whether the transmission needs a software update or not (dealerships/garages usually charge just to plug the diagnostics in, so don't expect it to be free). Also, software updates can't be done from your DIY VIDA setup at home.

Just a note, transmission adaptions & transmission software updates are totally separate. Don't confuse them as being the same because they aren't.

If you have VIDA you should also do the adaption relearn procedure following resetting the adaptions. I've found that resetting the adaptions only solves the jerky problems for a few weeks, especially on older transmissions.

The relearn lasts a lot longer if not indefinitely. Its worth doing it a couple of times so you get the hang of it.
