That's a new one on me. I only use Castrol Edge full synthetic 10/40 on all my Volvo's. Why not switch to that - fully approved by Volvo for all 5-Cyl applications right back to 1992.

Howdy John hope yoo good

My understanding has always been that for the 2.3T power unit we should all be using semi synthetic but always happy to read the views of others providing they are based on fact not delusion !!

And my sadly sold 850 T5 - 23 years of ownership 10/40 semi synth flew on it

Hi, how are you doing.

In my 1998 C70 T5 from new, I used Mobil 1 full synthetic 0W/50 up to around 300K miles, then Mobil 1 10W/60 competition in deference to its mileage. It did 415K miles in total with no mechanical bother at all and excellent oil consumption (4K to 5K per litre at 400K miles!) Full synthetic oil was recommended by Volvo for the T5's even back then.

Volvo started recommending Castrol Edge full synthetic for all 5-Cyl applications including way back to 1992, I think about 15 years ago. That's what goes into my T5-R, 2008 C30 T5 and 2011 C70 T5. Again, all seems excellent. The T5-R has 174K on it and, although it's a bit early to tell, I've done nearly 2K since I got it and I haven't noticeably used any oil. I use the 10W/40 in all 3. The C30 has 92K and the C70 90K. Both use only about a litre of oil every 10K miles.

John

Quick update on oils:

API is the American specification whereas ACEA is the European specification

Just looked at owners manuals for 850's and C/V/S 70's of 1998.
Recommended oils are those meeting API SG/CD or SH - these are old standards of the day and were the highest performing of the time. Semi synthetics and all synthetics would generally meet this standard.
The owners manuals recommend full synthetic oil for more arduous use - e.g. temperature extremes, towing and consistent hard driving.
As oils have improved, the standards have become more and more rigorous for things like temperature stability, viscosity stability, ash content, film breakdown, shear resistance etc.
Mobil 1 for example, is rated as API SN the most stringent current American standard and meets both ACEA A3/B3 and A3/B4. B3 is a high performance petrol engine standard and B4 is for direct injection diesels. Synthetics typically meet both.
Ideally you should be using an oil that meets ACEA A3/B3 or API SN. Mobil 1 10W/40 and Castrol Edge 0W/40 both do this. Both viscosity grades are suitable due to the wide range that full synthetic technology allows.

I've attached a link to a document which is all about oils that, if you have nothing better to do, is worth a read.

I'd either use Motul 10w60 or the silkolene titan 10w60 ester fully syn

10w40 semi is std or you could upgrade to 5w40 or 0w40, all A3/B4.
So long as its A3/B4 and from a main manufacturer you won't go wrong.

0w50 and 10w60 just give the engine excess oil pressure amd resistance, whilst the engines seem to tolerate it, it isnt good for them unless you happen to be on a track day (0w50) or endurance racing in a desert (10w60) and is certainly not an upgrade. There is no need and the thinking behind it is misinformed.

.

A3/B4 oil should never be used unless it is also certified to conform to A3/B3 as well. As per my above post, B3 is certified for use in high performance petrol engines, B4 is certified for use in performance diesel engines. Whilst many full synthetics are certified to conform to both B3 and B4, there are some that are not. Check, check check on the can what the oil is certified to.

Thanks everybody, the responses just go to show there really is confusion out there and as I was confused I would rather ask first and get it right

Will read your attachment John when I have a free day !!

All the best guys

Hi John,

Where do you buy your oil?

Can't seem to find the Castrol Edge 10w-40 Full-Synthetic online easily.

Regards,

James.
