1990 G Reg. 340, 1.4 manual looking for a new home

Hi - does anyone have any interest in this? Our 1990 340, 1.4, manual, white. 110,000 miles.

Has MOT till September 2017

Have owned this since 1994 so it has had 2 owners since new.

White, with grey interior.

Have been given a newer car so space restrictions means it’s time to dispose of this 340 which has been a great car over the years.

Main issue is corrosion on some body panels and elsewhere. Interior is in very good condition, and quite a few parts are fairly new, eg had a new radiator not so long ago (spent about £500 on it in 2015).

Dealer serviced from new till about year 2000 when I started to take it to a local independent Volvo specialist who has maintained it ever since, with at least a full annual service and any other recommended repairs carried out. All service documentation is available plus a notebook I complete listing any work carried out, including DIY work.

Garaged since 2000 too.

The car is not used for commuting and annual mileage is low, about 2,500 miles per year for most of the last few years. Car tends to be used for longer trips, not lots of short journeys.

For anyone interested – option could be to take it and use it as is, it’s reliable, got an MOT and I’ve no reason to believe it won’t keep going, or
tackle the corrosion issues and it would be an excellent 340 as it has a fine interior etc or use it for parts, as it’s got a lot of parts that have been used in a relatively low mileage car, and some replacement parts fitted relatively recently.

Would like to pass it on to a 340 enthusiast either for use or to help keep another one going.

I can probably post some pics if I can work out how to do that on the forum!

would be a great car , I assume a 5 speed ?
Two of these in the family , one 1980 model from 1982 to date , 250,000 miles never broken down or needed any parts except service stuff .
Acquired another 1988 model a few years ago , low mileage . again , never broken down or needed any unusual parts , this was typical of the 300 series when it was current ., the newer one will do 40 + mpg due to me fine tuning it for economy , still has it's original green coolant ...
These are bigger cars than they look , you can carry much more than modern cars in the boot . They were in the top ten most popular cars sold in the mid 1980's .

Would make a good buy! They were all 5 speed by 1990.

Agreed on the space, I've had much bigger cars with much less space in them! They have more room in than my old V40 T4 and that was supposedly an 'estate' :)

Thanks. Yes, 5 speed. Only break down I can ever recall was once in about 1995 when the immobilizer it is fitted with failed. Think that was an item fitted by the previous owner (ie not factory fitted). It never failed again though.

Indeed it does have great boot space, much better than the 2007 Polo that we got given and now use as a replacement, boot size on that very poor.

Interestingly it has other features much better designed than more recent cars I notice, eg the heating / ventilation (fresh air bypasses, heated seats, better screen demisting etc) are far superior in design and operation to the Polo I'm now using.

So I'm keen to try and find a good home for this one, even if that is as a parts donor for someone keeping another one up and running!

A 340 as I remember them! Sorry if I've missed it, how much would you be looking for for the car, and how much MoT is left? Hopefully the Polo will be as reliable for you - I have a 2001 1.0 Polo and have taken it to 174,000 miles. Boot space would be less than a 340 though!

Hi Joseph - MOT runs till early sept I believe. Interest has been fairly limited - though it is only 'advertised' here at the moment. So price is, realistically, in competition with scrap value I fear...
There is a local Volvo breakers not far from me, so I suspect that is where I'd ultimately take it were there to be no takers.

Yes, hopefully Polo will be reliable. Tend not to like the more complex fixes needed for any more modern vehicles.

Let me know if you have any further questions of course.

Cheers

If you can deal with a few no-shows and timewasters, I say throw it on ebay. There's a reasonable 340 following out there if you're not precious about seeing it on wide wheels and low springs.

I'd dearly love a 340 to play with, but unfortunately now is not the right time for me. I hope you find a home for it!

Thanks Joe. I'm sort of reluctant to bother with the time wasters really, but I appreciate your point. Cheers.
