GDI Throttle Position Sensor

Hi guys

I am struggling with finding a replacement sensor for my 2001 S40 1.8i SE.

The main problem is that it is a GDI engine, I bought a TPS, but it was the wrong one (found out when took engine cover off).

I can find a used one on eBay, but would prefer a new one.

I have the following engine fault codes:

P-1225 - TPS intermittent
P-0220 - TPS switch B circuit

Which both relate to the TPS; the car drives fine, idles fine, just when you hit a certain position on the accelerator pedal, the electronics will enforce limp home mode, and reduce the power.

As you can imagine this is extremely annoying. It seems to be getting worse the longer I leave it. But some days it won't happen, but I am learning to not use the accelerator as much (cruise control).

Any ideas where to go with this? I contacted a few garages for quotes, and none of them have actually called back.

I have emailed various Volvo specialist websites, again, no reply as of yet.

I really want to get this fixed, and it looks like I might have to buy that used one, and see if it helps solve the issue.

From my vigorous searching, I have came across this problem quite often with the GDI engine, and it seems that it is a hard part to source?

Thanks in advance for anybody that can help.

Can you not get them from Volvo? Have you tried FRF Swansea 01792 310999, quote forum discount code C3 for a reduced price.

I ended up buying a used one; is it a simple replacement. Or does it need to be adjusted etc?

I don't want to remove the old one, fit the new one, and then have even more issues.

Any input would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

The TPS can be rotated a few degrees either way before you tighten the bolts. There are 2 sensors in there that measure the position. These are the approximate values you should be getting with a multimeter

Hi Gatos

Thanks for a lot of helpful posts from you in this forum. Just a different question here. Do you have a magnet for the throttle body of 2001 GDI throttle body that might be spared? I was reading your another post and trying to glue the magnet back. Unfortunately, it was accidentally damaged and broken into a few piece. Thanks for your help.

Well.... I took my GDI 1.8i to the garage; and asked them to have a quick look.

I have the wrong TPS (again), apparently (according to Mike at FRF) there are 2 engines SJ & SM. So, the TPS I have is going back.

Mike at FRF can get me one for over £90 with discount, but he recommended using some Redex and giving it a blast on the motorway first.

My S40 doesn't display any other symptoms other than going into limp home mode from a standing start or holding low revs in traffic (and engine light of course).

Maybe it might fix it; he also mentioned a possible (but unlikely) sticky butterfly in the throttle body.

If the Redex doesn't do anything, I will ask someone to look at the throttle body, if that's okay, I will end up ordering the TPS from FRF.

Thanks for all your help!

See if blasting the engine will help. If not, I think I have 1 or 2 TPS sensors for your model

Wow! Thanks Gatos.

The one fitted to mine (should of took a photo of it, whilst the engine cover was off, again) has a sunburst, japanese rising sun pattern on the top of the sensor (only way I can explain it) and a small opening with butterfly like socket to mount onto the throttle body.

If you have pics (or could take some), I could confirm which one would fit.

I really appreciate the gesture Gatos. My S40 runs really nice other than this fault.

Thanks again.
