volvo v50 2.0d 2008 wont rev over 1200rpm

hi i recently purchased a 2008 volvo v50 2.0d and it was running fine until it completely cut out and when i started it back up it would only rev to 1200rpm so i plugged in an obd reader to see any fault codes but there were none so i tried to erase codes anyway and then the car started running and reving fine however i let it idle and as soon as i did that i wouldn’t rev past 1200 again now i am stuck
with it

Is it a dpf equipped car? Have you checked oil level?
No service messages on the dash?

My car went into limp mode but changing the diesel filter cured it. Non dpf model though.
Beware changing the filter yourself the system needs bleeding through or it won’t run at all.

1200 RPM doesn't even sound like limp mode. When mine went into limp mode it was limited to 3,000 with no turbo.

Is there a lot of black smoke visible when you try to rev up? If so check the anti shudder valve to see if this is sticky

averagetree Jun 16th, 2022 11:13

no there is no black smoke at all

A friend of mine had an old style V40 which did a smiliar thing and turned out to be a split hose (there was no smoke out of the exhaust like yours).

Just behind the bumper at the bottom from intercooler IIRC. Remember though this was an old style V40.
