2005 S40 T5 alternator help
 

Hi,
So my alternator failed last week so I’ve replaced with a refurbished alternator from eBay now I have el current too high message on the dash the charge rate is 17.2 volts my original one was 150 amp and the new unit is supposed to be the same the guy who I bought this off Is certain that this is the right part (150 amp) even tho there is no label to confirm, could there be anything else causing this problem, the car was only driven for less than 1/2 mile after the alternator failed

There are several different types of alternator available for these cars, and it's not uncommon to be supplied with the wrong type.

There are four different specs of '150 Amp' alternator and they are usually not interchangeable, so it's vitally important to check the part number on the original alternator and get an equivalent replacement. The T5's usually have an alternator that is controlled via a LIN bus connection, and can be either a Bosch or Denso each with different control signalling requirements.

You can read out the alternator type from the vehicle configuration list using VIDA, and then look up the Volvo part number for that type.

You may also be able to convince a friendly Volvo parts department person to look up the correct one for your car, as they will have access to the records of which type was originally fitted to your car.

If the car didn't have a 150A alternator before then it'll need a software upgrade from Volvo to use a 150A one. I'm having to have an aftermarket one taken out and a genuine Volvo one put in as after 2yrs I'm getting current warnings so I suspect the voltage regulator is playing up. Beware that a genuine Volvo alternator will cost as much as your car is worth.
