Help diagnosing 940 turbo steering noise and leak

Hey guys, can you help me diagnose this?
The car steering started making noises and I realised the fluid was very low. Topped it up and then found a leak on the steering rack. Is the rack surely gone? Is it worth using one of those leak stop liquids? And the noise, does it come form the rack or the pump?

A seal in the rack has blown so it will need a replacement rack or a rebuild.

Check the adjustment of the belt as it sounds like the tension might not be right and it is slipping as the stress is put on it at full lock. Normally a knackered pump and or low fluid level will make a groaning noise.

I've actually just realised I uploaded the wrong video. Cause there is another noise when I'm turning that this one doesn't show.

About the replacement. Do you think that's something I have to do right away? It says on your tag you sell parts, do you ship abroad? (spain)

That video sounds like air being forced out of a small gap such as the leaking seal. I would definitely be getting that rack refurbished or finding a replacemwnt one, be careful as there are two types depending on the year of your car.

I'm more than happy to post parts abroad but I have no steering racks unfortunately.

I'm finding about it just now. How can I find which type is mine? I've tried finding a volvo part catalog, but they don't show my car. They only show 940s up to 1995, even the supposedly european ones.

Is there a website where I can find a catalog of parts and their numbers for my car? In this case is a 1997 940 Classic Wagon, 135hp, 2.3 TI

First, have a look at this with particular reference to pages 6 and 125 :

http://www.myvolvolibrary.info/Tech_...DataPocket.pdf

Then for a parts catalogue : https://www.gcp.se/en/

There are 3 different types of steering gear (rack) that may be fitted, you should be able to find out on Pg6 by decoding the Product Plate what sort you have and Pg125 gives other useful information. The second link is to Volvo Genuine Classic Parts, you can find the rack in there and then order it through your Volvo dealer.

If Luke did have one it would be RHD so wouldn't fit. Bear that in mind as it will be no good to you ordering from the UK if you did see a good secondhand one

That "squeaky fart" noise is air in the PAS hydraulics, obviously from where the rack is leaking - you need to top up the reservoir and bleed the system with the engine running by turning from lock to lock several times S-L-O-W-L-Y to allow the air to be forced out in the reservoir and out then top up again.

How long that will last is another matter, seeing as you have a leak.

The same "squeaky fart" noise is displayed by the brake system when there is air in that as well.

You are right. I actually thought of that right after i asked. Since that I've found several parts cars on the internet that still have the rack, so I'm probably gonna get one next month.

Thx sir. That helps a lot. I had actually seen that "code" here on the forum but some said 3 was cam, others that 3 was zf. Thanks for sharing.

I'm considering trying a stop leak product like Lucas, while i look for a used rack. There are several parts cars online that still have the rack, so i can probably find a decent one for cheap.
Btw, is this rack the same as the 960, 740? Or are there differences beyond the type?
