I have been contacted by a man called Ron who specializes in VWs He recently purchase a huge quantity of Air Filters mad by Coopers amongst them are rectangular ones - Coopers part number AG416 which corresponds with Volvo Part numbers 6400373 and 679658 ( measure 32.5 x 12.4 x 3.4 cms )
and are for Volvo 142/144S 1968- and Volvo 145S 1968 - plus 164s.
from the description they fit in what I know as rectangular Air Box.
and are for twin carb models.
Ron lives in Wolverhampton they can be collect or posted from there
he is asking 1.00 pound per filter pus post and packing.
