850 T5 intermittent loss of power

I have a 1994 850T5 est and have recently been experiencing a loss of power. The engine ticks over fine but when under load at between 1500 and 2500 revs there is a lull in power as if there is no fuel or spark.
The engine will retard between these revs and then seems to cough and splutter, suddenly pick up power and then drive as normal.
I have changed the fuel filter as a precaution.
If anyone has any suggestions before I start changing everything to do with fuel and air, I would be really grateful.

RE: 850 T5 intermittent loss of power

I'd check the condition and gap of the spark plugs next. The more load/ boost an engine is under the harder it is for the spark to jump the plug gap. You could also check the condition of the ignition leads and rotor arm while you are at it.

You may also have a faulty CPS (camshaft positioning sensor). Located to the right of your distributor, looks like a black cap with a wire coming out of it. I don't know of a procedure to test it but if you do replace it, try to order one through your local Bosch dealer...

Good luck.

P.S. do a search in relation to the sensor
