tailgate sticks on xc 60

i have recently been having an intermittent problem. the rear hatch/ tailgate requires numerous presses on the pad (by the number plate) to open. remote doesnt work at all, or the button on the dash. Would a vida pick up or identify the fault? Or would it require stripping down and laboriously checking for damage or faults visually. Any thoughts or advice would be welcome, i would like to fix it and i'm sure its getting worse. Thanks in advance for a brilliant forum.....

You don’t say what age the car is, but one or two members have had problems in the past few months. Some have replaced the electric struts with gas ( making the tailgate 100% manual), a relatively cheap fix. Whilst others have bought new or second hand replacement strut/motors a tad more (lot more) expensive.

How did you get on?

I've got the same problem but I can always hear the microswitch click

I was hoping it would an easy fix like on the XC70.
