240 rear brakes

hope someone can help.the brakes on my 240 saloon seem fine but because of the size of my garage,i have to push the car in & out.Today i just noticed a grating noise coming from rear wheels? i'm guessing pads?
Does anyone know a way of finding out what type of rear brakes you have without removing them?? i've been told you can get 2 types.
Any help much appreciated.

240 Rear Brakes Type

I believe on the saloon there is a service plate (or sticker) below the rear window on the right hand side (on earlier models on the "B" post) which shows brake type fitted, if it is still there, type one is Girling, type two is ATE.
if the sticker is not to be found by looking at the rear pads the Girling type retaining pins are secured with "R" pins (a type of split pin) ATE don't use pins, the retaining pins are of a self gripping design.
hope this is useful to you.

If its not the brake pads, you would do well to check the handbrake shoes as well. These last for ages, but some of the bonded ones have had the friction material start to fall off as the 'glue' deteriorates with age. Hence scraping noises.

Luckily, my brakes are looking clean and pretty. I snatched this picture from the Swedish 200 Club forum FAQ.

Hope your locomotive is doing fine, Alec. The WD 2-10-0 is quite a machine!
