Glowplugs preheating
 

I own a s80 2009 2.4d with 2006-2009 dash (if this matters) and since the weather is getting colder every day I wonder, if the car knows and automatically waits for glowplug preheating indicator (little coil) to turn off before it starts to crank the engine when pressing start button only once with key inserted or do I have to insert key in push the start/stop button for 2sec to turn in position 2, wait for indicator to go off and than push it again to start the engine?

I have a 2009 D5, I just insert key, foot on clutch and press start. Engine starts and I have never noticed wether the heater light is on or off.

Know on the older 300tdi landrover it will start without heater plugs working even in the coldest weather, however the heaters continue to work off and on for 5 min even after the light has gone off, this aids cold running.

In realy sub zero temps I will wait for the light to go out if only to ease the load on the battery. In cold weather it's turn, or press and start.

I have noticed that my MY2011 S60 has had a delay between pressing the button and the engine turning over this last few days. It does seem to correspond with the light going out. The delay is very, very short, probably less than a full second!

I've noticed a starting delay on these colder mornings, which is to be expected on a Diesel engine. When I press the brake & then press the button to start, nothing happens for a few seconds & then the car starts up. I figured that its the heater plugs warming up before cranking the engine. This only happens on cold mornings, as it didn't during the summer months.

You don't have to wait for the heater plug light to go out. Just start the car as you usually do. The car will only fire up when its ready, as the pre-heating is automatic.

There is an indicator light, looking like a yellow spiral, that's on during the glowing time. But since these engines use ceramic glow plugs, it's not more than a couple of seconds, even if it's really cold.

Certain sensor faults in the car will allow you to start, but you'll have to hold the start button until the engine starts.

That delay to the starter motor turning over used to worry me until I realised that the starting sequence is computer controlled and this is initiated by a single momentary press of the button. It isn't necessary to hold the thing until the engine starts and on the diesel cars the operation of the glow plugs is part of this delay together with the electrical status checks. If you have always had cars where the starter key or button is a simple connection to the starter solenoid, the Volvo system is a little disconcerting until you get used to it. What with that and the need to fasten the seat belt before the electronic parking brake comes off, getting the car moving for a new owner is a slightly alien experience!

How to start in winter time

First of all apologies if the subject was already commented, I tried to read it all, but anyway, I decided to ask you for some info.
The car is S80, 2011, D5, 205 hp. I`ve never driven a car with start button before so I`m not very familiar how to proceed with the glowplugs preheating before starting the engine. Should I actually do anything specific before starting the engine.. should I activate the glowplugs in some way, or the whole process is automated and I should just start the engine the normal way - foor on the brake and pressing the start button... I thought of pressing the start button without foot on the brake, is it necessary ?

They tend to glow rapidly anyway unless they're dying, if it makes you feel better about it and if you are in a very cold area then the foot off ign position one is the way to go, you'll know if they're really needed as the car will crank longer if the cylinders aren't warmed enough to start up.
