Is a Haynes 240 manual any use for a 740
 

I've been given a Haynes 240 manual for ny birthday. It covers models from 1974 to 1986, and it includes the B230 engine in the supplement. I understand that my engine cane from a 1986 240, so obviously that info will be useful. How relevant are the other sections? I'll carry on looking for a 740 manual if one is available, but I'll keep this 240 one in the hope that I am able to buy the wagon in the bear future.

The engine part will be similar ie the actual physical engine but the carb/injection parts may vary a bit. The rest of the car is very different so I doubt much else would tie in.

Only way of getting a decent Haynes 740 manual now is to buy secondhand, Haynes changed them to a "Service & Repair" manual (blue cover) that is not only much thinner but a lot less use than the older "Owners Workshop Manual" and i'm not even sure they are still in print - everything seems to be digital these days.

I would broadly agree, '360beast', but perhaps extend it's usefulness to include other things mechanical - not just the engine? Transmissions for example; Volvo used many common units across the ranges over the years.

You are right; the bodywork is quite different, but under the skin there are many similarities. I think 'Offgrid' will find the 240 manual useful for his 740, especially if he regards it as a guide in principle for the motor car rather than a specific point of reference. It will be much better than nothing, although clearly a dedicated 740 one would be preferable.

I have, when I have been looking in the past, found used manuals in charity shops for a few pounds.

Meanwhile, if 'Offgrid' is unsure whether or not a specific component is common to both models, he only has to ask. There is an almost infinite pool of knowledge and wisdom among members of this forum upon which he can draw. :regular_smile:

There were several Editions of the Haynes Volvo 740 & 760 Service and Repair Manual 1982-1991 (up to J reg) Petrol.

The Edition to get is the last one dated 2003 on the inside front page bottom left'ish.

It took Haynes 13 years from the introduction in the UK of LH2.4 engines to include information on them!!

Service and Repair manuals are useless Bob, hardly any info in them compared to the older style! I have info in my grey Haynes manual baout the LH2.x systems, mine is similar to the one i linked to above but if memory serves (without checking further up the thread) the OP has the B230E engine so it will be K-Jet, not electronic at all and certainly not LH2.x of any description! :nah:

I have got the Haynes service and repair manual for the 940 but I hardly ever refer to it. The first place I look is the online FAQ and then YouTube videos which very often show the exact procedure needed. Some of my favourite channels are FCP Euro, Robert DIY and Involv’d but there are others.

Also don’t forget to search for past threads on here.

Quite agree Dave but, you can't get anything new now (or in 1990) for the 740 other than the far less detailed Service and Repair Book or, if wanted, the older style manual off ebay etc.

I have also got a copies of the old style Haynes manual for both the 240 and 740 which are useful, together with copies downloaded from the internet of Volvo's 740 Green Books covering many specific subjects in great detail.
