Heater matrix hoses (D24TIC)

Hi all,
The hoses to and from the heater matrix in my diesel 940 are a bit ratty and perished and I’d like to replace them as part of the complete cooling system overhaul I’m doing on the car. The only issue I have is finding any! Does anyone know if there are specific parts available or will I have to fit some standard 19mm ID reinforced hose in their place? I’ve searched everywhere I can think of online but to no avail.

Many thanks
Phil

I'm pretty certain they'll be 16mm bore Phil, a quick measure of the diameter on the stubs from the ehater matrix will prove this - you're measuring the smaller diameter, not the bulbous barb to prevent the hose coming off.

I'd suggest buying some heater hose (16mm) "off the roll" on ebay, it's reinforced and won't go hard, brittle and discolour like PVC or go soggy with heat.

Forgive my ignorance please, but the two genuine hoses are preformed and each has 180deg bend at one end. Is it possible to bend straight hose to match without kinking?

That's a good question Ian - normally no but you can buy nylon elbows and use two to make a 180 degree bend with a short piece of hose between the two to make them a squared off "U" shape.

Alternatively, use some 15mm domestic copper pipe with a straight Yorkshire fitting soldered onto each end to provide ridges for the hose to prevent sliding off and bend into a "U" shape, either by filling with sand or using a bending spring inside and a tubing bender.
If the tubing bender has good dies that support the sides of the pipe, you won't necessarily need the bending spring or sand, either would need to be removed after.

Yes as we know the O.E hoses are pre formed.i was hoping that some of the standard hoses can be bent and not KINK but ive not bought any ive seen gates greenstrip sold buy the metre very expensive but that may be the only way to go .O.E ones no longer available for these but some hoses still are .im not keen on useing plastic or copper jointed with bits of hose but eventually we will have to sort this issue out !

I bought some of this when I was struggling to find OEM replacements for my petrol 940. I didn’t use it in the end because it transpired the leak wasn’t from the heater hoses but instead from the oil cooler coolant pipes. It seemed pretty heavy duty and a reasonable price but I think it would have been a pain to fit given the inaccessible location of the heater pipework on a petrol 940.

I suggest that the hose to the water pump rigid pipe could be relatively straight if the rigid pipe to the water pump was shortened so that it terminated under the exhaust manifold instead of behind the block under the distributor.
Using an excessive length of hose to the block stub could possibly work if space could be found to to bend it without kinking and without fouling anything else.
Paul’s suggestion would be neater though. He and I are both familiar with successfully using 15mm copper pipe to join both the hoses to bypass the heater whilst having heater or HCV leakage problems.

Good idea Ian but the one big problem would be having the rubber hose that close to the exhaust manifold. Bad design on Volvos part as they used something designed for LHD models and then created a hose to fit - if they created a "RHD return pipe" to live under the exhaust manifold and connect to the water pump inlet then a length of normal heater hose would do the job to link it to the matrix outlet.
Likewise if a piece of metal (copper?) pipe was created to link the output from the head to the right hand side of the engine/bulkhead area, a similar length of normal heater hose would do the job - an extended version of my "U" shape suggestion further up.

I was only thinking of shortening the metal water pump pipe slightly by removing the 90deg bend at the back end but leaving the full length of the straight section which is under the exhaust manifold.
