Is this price correct for egr replacement
I've been quoted £800 by Halfords to replace the egr cooler on the V70 I have.
Plus the engine mounts need replacing passenger side I've already spent way over that on a new clutch and other odds and sods. So three questions.... 1. Is that a reasonable quote? (£600 part and the rest labour) 2. Do you have any idea what it normally costs to have the engine mounts done? (It's the rubber bits I'm told and it passed its MOT) 3. When would you call it a day and get another car? |

My advice would be to find an independent Volvo specialist to do the work. You’re based in Sale, so not too far from Stockport. Give Hallmark Volvo a try… these guys know their stuff & won’t rip you off. They aren’t that far from sale, maybe 20 minutes? |

The cooler is also just a huge hole which at worst gets clogged and just needs cleaning, never replacing. Attached to the cooler is the valve which once again needs cleaning at worst and the EGR actuator which generally needs nothing ever. 2. This is the P2 platform section and I'm not aware of any passenger side engine mount so what model and model year are we talking about? 3. You can keep these running for years for reasonable money if you use people who know the cars and don't replace expensive parts unnecessarily. |

Popped over this afternoon to take a look and as suspected, this appears to be a case of shame on you Halfords.
I pressurised the cooling system to around 12 psi to mimic normal operating pressure and sure enough a fairly powerful pinhole jet of coolant began to spurt from the EGR area. It was a short section rubber hose which connects one of the EGR coolant pipes to the main cooling system. Excess movement of a ribbed fresh air intake pipe has resulted in it wearing through the coolant hose with a very noticeable gouge formed. An unusual failure as the fresh air pipe is normally connected to a metal pipe section which in turn should be secured to the engine block with a bolt. That bolt and bracket were still screwed into the engine but the bracket had sheared away from the pipe allowing the pipe to become loose and rub. 18 years of vibration and tired engine mounts have finally taken their toll. :) Being Volvo, this 4 inches or so of rubber will cost around £25-30 but that should be the leak sorted. A new EGR was 100% not required and Vida showed the EGR operation to be whilst not perfect, absolutely fine. A thorough clean will restore factory operation. As I see it, Halfords would have got away with their blatant dishonesty by replacing the EGR cooler and the short rubber hose, curing the leak as requested and happily taken £800 for the privilege which is pretty unforgivable in anyone's book. These are nice, genuine, honest and trusting people who deserve better. I'll update the thread as things progress as we're looking at putting the money to things that will actually be beneficial to the running of an otherwise honest car with getting on for 240k on the clock. |

It was so lovely to meet Simon, who took a couple of hours (or more) out of his own day to thoroughly check my car over.
Not only did he check the car, but fully explained everything he was doing as he did it so even a luddite like I understood. I'm very happy now that any more money spent on my car will be for actual legitimate issues. As I said to Simon earlier, I'm going to tell Halfords what I think of them... But am trying to find a clever way of doing it. He's amazing. Thank you again!!!! |
