Boot Load Cover/Floor Gas Strut
Hi guys,
Thought I would share this (picked it up from a Polish Volvo forum). The strut that holds the boot floor up in my 2010 XC70 had lost it's strength. It turns out, the rear boot strut for recent Peugeot 206's is a similar size and works great in it's place. I got mine from Ebay for £12 - A Meyle branded one (search MEYLE 11-40 910 0016 GAS SPRING REAR WINDSCREEN). It's slightly longer I think and definitely stronger than the original. But it takes 20 secs to change and just means you need to compress it slightly before fitting (fit one end, compress and clip on other end). Works an absolute treat. Effortless up and down :) |
I knew that I always struggle with the boot floor on my XC70 and put it down to the fact that I have a heavy duty rubber liner which weighs down the floor but I couldn't remember seeing a gas strut there. Of course it does have one but it doesn't seem to do anything at all with the extra weight of the liner so if the Peugeot one is considerably stronger, that would be a great bonus. Is the difference you feel that compared to the original Volvo unit in working condition or does it feel stronger because the original is not working? Certainly worth £12 for any improvement over the current situation.

The Volvo strut is a Stabilus 5901YM rated at 100Nm, the Peugeot one is a Stabilus 6642PF rated at 140Nm. I fitted an old Pug strut I had but it still struggles with a rubber mat in the back, maybe because of its age.

I've ordered the Peugeot one and will see how it copes.

For reference, I tried fitting these:
https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/2x-Univer...N/184222724225 And they're the right size, but a bit too strong. You have to put your hand over the strut attachment point when closing the boot floor otherwise the floor flexes before it compresses the strut. The other problem is that it made the metal bracket on the chassis bend slightly (which caused the ball joint to pop off), so I have to put a couple of bits of wood behind it to stop the bracket from bending. Ideally, I'd have fitted something weaker, but I had these lying about. Sounds like something between 140nm and 240nm might be the sweet spot? |
Not really surprised as at 240N they are nearly 2½ times as powerful as the specified units! I was worrying about fitting 140N struts.

You can spec your own struts from these, either fixed or adjustable force.https://www.strutsdepot.com/

Reporting back with fitting the 140N Meyle gas strut. It works a whole lot better than the original 100N unit and if I ensure that the floor panel is raised to the full extent of the strut, it keeps it up in place. I suspect that if, like me you have a heavy rubber mat permanently in place in the load space, you'd probably do better with a 160+N unit that would hold the floor panel in place at wherever level you left it rather than having to pull it fully open to get it to stay put. But I am pleased with the replacement and it serves me well enough compared with the under powered OEM strut, which if anybody who doesn't have rubber load space liners needs a replacement OEM strut, they can have the discarded one for free if they can collect in the Bournemouth area. PM me if you want it.

Thanks for all the very helpful information. I have ordered the strut mentioned in the first post, and thanks to Tatsfield for having ordered and confirmed that it works well. I do not have a heavy mat as I have the Volvo hard high-sided load-liner, which obviously has to be removed before the floor is lifted. I await its arrival. Many thanks.

New strut arrived - took two minutes to fit - works perfectly. Many thanks.

Sorry for the delayed reply - don't come here too often. Glad I could help, the 140nm unit holds the standard boot floor (with no heavy cover) up great. We have dog mats in the boot too and it has no issues.

Thanks you guys for all this info. Today, I replaced the original boot floor strut on my 2009 V70 D5244 T5 with one from Meyle and it works a treat; about an 1" longer but fully supports the floor with my tools in etc. Very grateful.

Hi guys, are there parts these attach to? Volvo in their penny pinching have removed this from the 2023 V90, and as before, bit of webbing and a hook.
I wonder if it’s possible to retrofit? |
Thanks for the info, I've a rezoplast boot liner, can confirm the pug version lifts it up and holds it up "just".
|
When you come to renew it, 140N will give more assist.

Did this on the weekend, installed the 140Nm one, oh boy, it becomes erect very quickly!

Replaced mine at the weekend too and it works a treat - I bought this one from Ebay:

Can someone post a picture of where these struts go please? My ex-Police car had a bit of carpeted mdf instead of the floor panel and I had to get one from a scrapper. I had no idea that these actually existed!

My 2014 didn’t have a strut, therefore I’m order to retrofit I bought a used floor panel (as mine needed replacing anyway) and made sure the one I bought had the small attachment knob fitted. I then bought a used left hand side floor rail as this is where the lower attachment point is, again made sure it had the attachment knob on it. Finally I cut the slot out of the storage tray (using pictures of used trays online) and fitted a brand new strut - which works perfectly. All in the cost was approx £65 - £35 for the floor, £15 for the rail and £15 for the strut. |
