Does anyone know what this noise is?

Hi,
I have this noise from my engine. It seems to come from the left hand side. I think it is loudest from the bottom of the car, but my hearing isn’t great unfortunately. The noise is there whilst idling but disappears when I rev the engine. I have a 07 d5 diesel xc70. Thanks for any pointers.

Sounds like an Aux belt tensioner pulley to me , Have you had it serviced properly ? They are changed on the service schedule long before they wear .. if the pulley disintegrates it will most likely wreck the engine as the belt gets tangled in the cambelt ...

Thanks for the reply. My normal mechanic has gone bump so I can't get in contact with him anymore. He did the servicing but, to be honest, I was going to move on from him as he did my hand brake with the adjusters that you buy. He left it stuck on and I've been back numerous times and it still doesn't work properly, the hand brake is springy when it's not on?? Anyway, I have no faith in what he has done. How do I check the tensioner? Thanks for any help.

One other thing u noticed the other day was that the power steering fluid overflowed for no apparent reason. It hasn't happened since, it was a really hot day and I did a lot of driving that day so I thought things just got to hot.Is it possible the power steering pump is on it's way out. I'm just guessing!

As mentioned above, the pulley is a critical urgent repair on these D5 engines. When it's chirping like this it can go at any moment and as mentioned by Clan, this is how to majority of the D5 engines got their valves bent. You can replace the pulley alone, get only Ina. For the ps fluid, it expands as it warms up

I'll get it in the garage as soon as I can. Cheers.

you need someone experienced , they will soon locate the fault from that noise !

Regarding the handbrake , That " Adjuster " was never on the car from new , It is a bodge as I have said on here many times , There is another underlying fault with the parking brake , It probably needs an overhaul with volvo shoes and springs and probably brake disks .
Your parking brake will lock the wheels on the 2nd click when it is working properly WITHOUT any extra "adjusters"

I’ve taken of the belt cover and the alternator bearing is clearly knackered. I’ve got it off the road until Thursday when a mechanic is going to fit me a new and got him to fit a new tensioner and belt so it’s done and dusted. Thanks for the pointers it’s been a massive help.

I’m going to search up on removing the hand brake adjusters and sorting it properly as my previous mechanic just decided to put them on. Thanks for all the advice.

Good thing you caught it timely. It's an engine killer thing. May spin those other pulleys while there, including the ac compressor one

if you remove the adjusters you'll need the original spacers to replace them with, which I'm assuming he ditched. from my measurements the adjusters being wound right in gives the same spacing (or near enough) as the original spacer bar

I'm a bit confused though. I'm not doubting for a minute the wealth of experience Clan has but the handbrake is nowhere NEAR locked up on 2 clicks on my car. if I get that tight I have drag on the rear wheels when handbrake 'released'

the A1 auto woman (for whatever that's worth..) says 6 clicks. I'm locked up on 5 clicks unless downhill and in D in which case, 6 clicks.

that's with Volvo shoes, Brembo discs, all new, new cables, new springs.. the only thing I haven't replaced is the first cable attached to the handbrake lever itself which I can't imaging getting stretched because it's so fat

do you think there's something wrong with mine then, because other than the idea that it should work on 2 clicks it otherwise seems totally fine
I could maybe make it 4 clicks but I'd be worried about the drag. and I did have to wind my adjuster out slightly on the passenger side to get the two wheels to lock up evenly

before I touched them it was also 6 clicks (Well, 7 at first but I tightened it up after watching A1 auto)

with apologies for another thread hijack, I keep doing that I know! sorry
