v70xc (2000) transfer box
I've just managed to blow up the transfer box on the car, I think worn tyres gave it a nervous breakdown. Does anybody know of a replacement? I have been advised that this part is year specific, just to make it challenging.
I would be very grateful for any help. |
I could confirm this for earlier cars (there were quite a few different ones) - if you can get a part number off yours that would be the best way to ensure fitment.
As for availability - scarce. You might be waiting a day for a replacement part, or 3 months! |

£300 ish from a breakers, nearly £800 iirc from Volvo. Plus fitting.
Are you sure it's the box and not just the splined sleeve/collar? If you're very lucky the collar will have failed and not damaged the input shaft to the transfer box yet. |
Thans Paffel
the numbers on the box are 97LW513534 also 50-42LE and 1208956 I'm not sure which one is the serial number, but hopefully someone will point me in the right direction. |
These numbers relate to the auto box itself, not the transfer/angle gear box.

Thanks Yosser,
Obviously looking in the wrong place. Do you know where it is stamped on the transfer box? |
Hello
I have a transfer box, but it's from a slightly earlier car. There is a part number on the top of the housing of the transfer box, I am not sure it would be visible whilst still fitted. I can send pictures of the box I have for you to compare with yours, if that would help? |

I don't know for sure, but 440Turbo is probably correct. I have the old one from my XC70 at a friends workshop, I'll have a look at that over the weekend and try to get a picture for illustration. |
This is the transfer box otherwise known as angle gear or bevel gear
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...1/P1050261.jpg You can see on the left hand side to the right of those two ridges there is a part number. The bit at top centre is the output shaft which bolts to the propshaft. You can see the bolts on the right hand side which is where it bolts to your gearbox. You can also see the collar/sleeve on the right hand side which joins the gearbox to the transfer box. The picture below shows the input shaft of the transfer box. You can just see the edge of the splines on the picture. If these are rounded, you need a new transfer box. If buying second hand, make sure these splines are good. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...1/P1050264.jpg The picture below shows the collar/sleeve/coupling. These can be purchased new from Volvo for approx. £60. There was a revision to these which makes them stronger so I would suggest fitting a new sleeve even if you fit a second hand transfer box that comes with a decent sleeve. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...1/P1050265.jpg These transfer boxes are more compatible than people think. The output shaft can be unbolted from your old and new transfer box so that it mates up to the propshaft regardless. The input shaft must have the same amount of splines on both boxes though. |
