2004 V70 R Servicing

Hi all,

I am looking at a 2004 V70R Auto with the 5 speed gearbox. I have asked the owner about what has been done to the drivetrain in as far as serivicing/oil changes. The response I got was that it has been serviced at a Volvo main dealer and has been serviced according to Volvo recommendations. The car has done 94,000 miles so can anyone advise what servicing if any Volvo recommend for the gearbox, haldex unit, diffs etc.

Many thanks

The simple answer to your questions :- Zip, Nadda, & Zilch.
All the units you mention are "sealed for life". However, Volvo's definition of "life" and many owners definition of life are totally different. If the cars been " serviced to recommendations" the engine oil/filter will have been changed regularly, as too should be air filter and spark plugs. Details of all these intervals can be found via google. Brake fluid and coolant changes, and power steering fluid are at owner option.
I bought my AWD R 2004 in 2008 with 47k its now at 121K. A few years back I changed (genuine Volvo) the gearbox oil ( manual) Bevel gear, Haldex Oil, and rear diff. All oils were clean save the Haldex which was minging- I suspect lots of ultra fines bits from the Haldex clutch plates. There is a haldex filter, but its a pain to get at, AND the bolts are ferrous into aluminium casting and thus prone to seizing and thus snapping - which then leads to the biggest b@ll ache imaginable ( exhaust off; propshaft off or disconnected at rear - assuming you can remove the 6 allen bolts, the remove the haldex unit to drill out the snapped filter bolts) Needless to say I have not changed my filter..I renew the oil every 12 months and disturb as much crud the the haldex ( blow air in) before removing the oil. Despite annual removal, the last time I removed the oil filler/removal plug it snapped the 1/4" drive extension I was using. (Torque is 5NM). Stuff seizes on these cars..

Cheers
Bob
