Car shuts off, had to enter radio code
Greetings
RE 2001 S-40 150k on the clock I was stopped at a traffic light and the car shuts off. Started right back up - but had to enter the Radio Code. Question: What wires could be loose or corroded that would require the radio code to be entered. ** Battery Cables ** Battery to ??? cable connection. FWIW I replaced the entire ignition wiring harness. The battery is brand new. Many thanks, T in Carolina |
Check if the batter terminals are clean and the clamps are tightened. Also check the blue thick ground wire that is bolt on the chassis of the car kind of below the battery and slightly towards the engine. It can some time corrode and cause earth issues

Re Engine Shutoff
Yo Gatos - I hope all is well on your side of the pond !
Your answer is exactly what I was looking for = the other battery connections that may cause this issue. The terminals are clean as part of new battery install. ... didn't know about the blue wire to the chassis I'll check that soon My daughter just had another baby - boy - now we have five grands - but they are 8 hours away, ten if my wife drives. Take care and stay well. Tom |

The wiring can corrode in the loom under the radiator and half way up both sides. cut off the black sheath and examine each wire for bulges or imperfections which would indicate the copper has turned to white dust . |
S-40 shutting off at idle
3 Attachment(s)
Drum Roll ... The answer was severely "corroded" positive battery cable.
The part that connects to the terminal was extremely thin and totally eaten up at the bottom. Changed it out with Genuine Volvo and the car starts with a roar ! My good guy mechanic charged me $90 for labor, which I was happy with. Thanks to all who replied. T in Carolina |
