XC60 Fuel Pump Failure

Hi, I am wondering if anyone has experienced a failure of their "secondary" fuel pump on an XC60? This pump as I understand it serves to keep the fuel balanced between the saddle tanks but is also integral to fuel flow to the engine.

Mine went recently without warning and cost A$2430 (£1,150) to repair (plus towing costs as the vehicle became inoperable).

The cost included a large contribution by the need to cut through and then repair the exhaust pipe plus dropping the axle and entire rear suspension and tank to get at the pump. The Volvo engineers did not consider access in their design - assuming perhaps the pump would never fail?

I am wondering if this issue has begun to crop up with other XC60's or I am in fact just unlucky to have had a bad egg.

My vehicle is a Model Year 2010, D5 LE with 140,000 km.

So...

The other question I have for those who are more expert than I am, is if there is a sudden failure of the pump could it be considered a severe safety issue? Fortunately for us, the failure happened just as we started the car before a steep descent where a we imagined total loss of power could have been disastrous.

There was no warning in the vehicle behaviour prior and in fact I had only just driven away from a Volvo dealer that had done an oil change - coincidental but apparently totally unrelated.

Volvo has so far indicated no interest in the matter at dealer, national or HQ level chalking it up to a normal maintenance issue that should be within owner expectation.
