Which V40 to buy?

My brother in law is after a V40, any comments on which models/years are to be avoided? Issues to look out for on a second hand V40? thanks Tim (480 & 960)

With so many models to choose from now and with every opinion being subjective probably the best way forward is to try a view at a couple of dealers.

However in general terms if you are looking for performance then in order of power go for T4, T, 2.0, 1.8.

Comfort levels CD, SE, Base

Newer models have differing spec designations and the new base models have bits which were extras on the old ones!

Post back if you have any specific questions and I'll do my best to answer.

Sorry, I think the 1.8i still tends to be a slug of a car considering the size of the engine. I occasionaly drive the missus's V40 and I really don't rate the engine at all. Torque seems to drop away really quickly after second gear, too quick IMHO. The car is too heavy for the size of engine. A 2.0, 2.0T or 1.9 T4 are the best configurations.

Are the 1.8 S/V40's that bad? I got my 440 when my other halfs dad replaced it with a 1.8i V40 and he is over the moon with it (the V40 that is). My opinion of the 440 is that whilst it won't keep up with a hot hatch, it more that matches most traffic and has oogles of torque for it's size (995kg). It's so lazy it's unreal, I don't go over 2000 revs normally as it just pulls and pulls at low revs I use the gears very rarely as I don't need to 40kmph in 4th and she just pulls away nicely! And I am thinking of changing next year (for a 1.8, 2.0(t) or T4 S40, will these be not as good?

I've driven the 1.8 SE V40 Phase 2 as well.

You'll be perfectly happy with the performance - it drives just like any other car of the same power / weight etc.

The only thing I noticed compared to my normal T4 Auto was the higher revs accross the board at the same speed - and a lot more economy as well.

RE: Which V40 to buy?

We sent it back to the garage to check it out because the performance when we bought it was really bad, but they couldn't find anything wrong.

I actually thought it wasn't an injection at the time, even though the insurance document said it was and the 'i' was missing from the "1.8" of the badge. Volvo Customer Services said it wasn't an injection when I gave them details regarding the car, but the Volvo garage said it was after they serviced it. (And all this because I couldn't get the protective cover off the engine to see if there was a carb or not).

Anyway, if you guys reckon that 1.8i should be "nippy" then perhaps there is something wrong or maybe I am spoilt by the T4 (better not buy a T5 then) :-)

Seriously though, does anyone know a good way to check the performance ?
I suppose a 0 - 60 test should give me a very rough idea of whether I'm just expecting too much !

Cheers,

John

The 1.8 V40 should do 0-100kph (62mph) in 10.5 secs if manual, a fraction longer if auto.

So compared to the T4 it's a good 30% slower of the mark!

Surely any new car *has* to be an injection these days purely because of the emisions and ECU... I know that teh SPI in my 440 is there so the ECUcan manage the engine and look after the cat.
