B18u intake valves

Looking to get a set of 4,new,same make valves for my 1996 460.

Planning on doing a head job in the near future whilst engine is being bored (1900cc muthatruckers!)

doingitsideways Aug 28th, 2015 12:23

Have you pulled the head then?

Why not just use a 2.0 bottom end?

Afaik, they're the same bar the bore.

Anadinolin Aug 28th, 2015 13:10

Ooh, really? I'll try and get a 2.0 then ;) not pulled the head yet, that will be done in a couple of weeks time. Sourcing parts atm hehe.

doingitsideways Aug 28th, 2015 19:46

I think they are anyway.
A little more research probably required than my say so!

Don't forget though that with extra displacement, you'll need more fuel or it'll spend half it's life pinging, leaving you back to square one.

The 2.0 is a different block , the stroke is longer , the block is about 1/2 " taller . so cambelt is probably longer too .

doingitsideways Aug 28th, 2015 22:36

Ah, my bad.

I always thought that the 1.7s were F2N based and the 1.8/2.0 both based on the F3R.
Must just be the 2.0 then.

Yup, just Wiki'd it.
The B18u and B20F both have the same bore, but different strokes.
Renault designation is F3P for the B18u and F3R for the B20F.

did Renault actually use the B20F version themselves?

classicswede Aug 29th, 2015 09:13

Yes they did also use the B20F version.

Like you said the block is taller and also uses a longer belt. All the B18 bits will bolt on for swapping it over. I use the B20F in my 340 with all the B172K engine stuff fitted to it

i remember the B20F water pump is different .. How does the 300 go with a B20F ? in the 400 it always seemed almost vicious in it's big torque delivery .. I guess it will outperform a GLT .

classicswede Aug 29th, 2015 22:03

Yes went very well. Very free revving with a 2.5" exhaust on it. I did have problems with it causing teh prop to slip back on the spines and never kicked the clutch knowing how weak the prop is.

I was very tempted when a formula Renault Engine came up on ebay. That would have been very interesting

doingitsideways Aug 29th, 2015 22:49

Yeah, I really like the B20F.

Very good torque curve from really low down, almost all the way to the limiter.

Loves to rev too :)

classicswede Aug 30th, 2015 22:20

Rev limiter? What is one of those for?

Anadinolin Sep 3rd, 2015 06:55

All this talk of a 2.0 conversion has got me thinking, any f-type Renault engine will fit with a few bolt on bits?

F4r from a clio 172/182/192?

Or if I can get one, F4rt 225bhp? (teehee fart)

Bit torn though as it's my grandfather's car and I want to keep it stock/concourse as possible for sentimental reasons...although my grandfather did do some bits to the car to make it that bit quicker...

doingitsideways Sep 3rd, 2015 15:36

I think if you went with any of the F4's, you'd have to change management as well.

Would be good though, especially a fart :)

Anadinolin Sep 4th, 2015 10:02

Yeah, I'm gonna programme up a custom ecu. Got one from my old escort that I'll use and get an anti-lag for the turbo ;)

Gotta find a fart first, if not I'll settle for an f4r n try to get a 192 version from the clio cup. Still toying with the idea, I want to keep the original engine in there, but the more power seems to be very nice, can't stop dreaming about it lol

doingitsideways Sep 4th, 2015 11:16

Yeah, would be nice.

You'll find though, that unless you can graft the Renault gearbox in as well, the Volvo 'box is the weak link.
Would be much better with the Renault 'box though. Don't know if they did one with an LSD, but my Turbo suffers greatly with lack of traction, will be much worse when I've manually converted it and fitted the bigger turbo, etc!

Anadinolin Sep 4th, 2015 13:36

I hope to get the box aswell, and hope that it has lsd if not I'll rob it from my wife's megane sport lol. (could swap the engines, do you think she would notice?) lol

doingitsideways Sep 4th, 2015 23:04

Unless she drives it like it should be driven, probably not!

Anadinolin Sep 5th, 2015 19:49

It just sits there doing nothing :(

Found an engine and gearbox, the gearbox has lsd in it :)

Anadinolin Sep 7th, 2015 05:58

Ordered the engine...f4rT 774 from a r26 megane without ancillaries :) negotiating a price for the 7speed box, both have 1 year warranty and I'm looking to get the fueling system, manifolds (intake and exhaust) and hopefully the turbo too from the same suppliers.

Any thoughts on what else I should get?

classicswede Sep 7th, 2015 09:47

Might want to consider these

Anything else?
Erm...
Massive bakes, (the Renault calipers are actually really good) full suspension upgrade...

This misfire is turning into quite the project!

Anadinolin Sep 7th, 2015 14:45

I'll get some with some carriers, I'm not sure what the driveshafts will be doing in terms of "can I plug them in and go" kind of way, then I can work on the volvo hubs etc

They'll probably come after the engine swap so I know what I have to work with hehe

The 460 pcd is 4x100, and I cannot find decent alloyos over 15" without it getting expensive, I also want to stick with stock looking alloys for more Q car wteffery

doingitsideways Sep 7th, 2015 16:13

Driveshafts - yours are hollow and WILL snap as soon as you dump the clutch.
Custom shafts most likely, prob shortened Megane jobbies.

Wheels - same PCD as 4 stud VW, so lots more choice there.
Example: my Ronals are from a Golf I think. 16" x 7 or 7.5j, can't remember which now.
