This post is spot on couldn't agree more. Warming up to temp before any progressive driving and letting it sit on idle after a decent run helps too

Hi yes this is what I do as the 2002 d5 don't have a water cooled turbo, so it needs to cool down before switch off,

2006 163 bhp on 223k no engine issues other than a broken swirl arm. Runs like new origeonal clutch and I tow with it quite often. Not well serviced due to laziness. Best engine I've ever seen and I'm in the car trade since I could walk!

D5 going strong!

I inherited my 2003 S60 D5 SE auto in 2011, my dad had it for 4yrs before that. 119000 on the clock. No issues. Serviced every year love it. Got a bit of a heavy right foot myself but what a car. Seriously just passed mot again not even an advisory. Really considering investing in some upgrades could do with any tried & tested ideas, advice on what route to take. But as far as unreliable goes? NO WAY!!

I agree with this. I was looking over a 2006 BMW 330d recently...it had 139,000 miles on the clock, and the noise coming from the cam cover sounded extremely concerning.

No such noises from my D5.

#1 163 on 184k, the only fault on the entite car in its entire lifetime is an ABS ring.

#2 185 Polestar on 155k, zero faults in the entire car in its lifetime.

#3 200 on 170k (recently sold), zero faults on the entire car in its lifetime.

#4 185 on 62k...only owned it a few months so cannot hand on heart say, although its sewing machine smooth and quiet.

All owned from new, other than #4. Most importantly in my mind all (other than #4) have been maintained absolutely correctly with no shortcuts or attempts at penny pinching, all as reliable as granite. Any suggestion the D5 family is inherently unreliable is utter rubbish.
