So, 'we' took the decision to invest in significant renewable generation capacity in the North Sea / on the East Coast and then this happens:

It's starting to feel as if we're living in one of Terry Gilliams' fever dreams.

Massive investment in generating capacity, which we now need to connect to the grid but "wires bad". And lending their voices and support to those opposed to these plans are the current environment secretary and the previous home secretary, no less. How exactly do we think the demands from all these electric vehicles, fast chargers and heat pumps are going to be met?

According to National Grid, there's a requirement to build more new transmission lines in the next 7 years than we have done on the past 30. Can you see how that's going to work, when every single application will be dogged by nimby-ism? The same source says that underground cabling would cost 10x as much to deliver - guess who would be paying for that!

Sometimes I think we, the people, get the government and country that we deserve.

Decades of underinvestment in education means the bulk of the population think what's happening on facebook and on soaps is more important than what's happening in government.

I think its more a matter of government has got the people they desire.

I have long believed that if every insurer insisted every car had a "black box" and that was online and linked directly to your premium, the national demand for petrol and diesel used in passenger cars would fall 10%-20%. If people were penalised financially for speeding and inefficient driving (constantly hard acceleration, overtaking etc.) without it being a criminal process, I think most of us would drive differently. I'm not advocating it by the way, it's just a view I'm sharing.

We've got that in our home village. They are building a large converter station just between Beverley and Hull which I think is where the DC feed from the "Hornsea Four" offshore wind farm gets converted to AC and then there will be another massive substation a mile away to link it to the grid. They've now just mentioned they need to build another 90km of pylons to get the juice to the national grid in the midlands, but in East Yorkshire at least this will be an additional, duplicate cable alongside existing pylons so the visual impact is negligible really. But oh my word judging by the leaflets coming through the door and the post on the local facebonk groups they might as well be building an airport...

Financially it depends on your circumstance, your local tax system etc - leases on EV's as part of your salary package are for example tax-free in Oz (for the moment).

This is what drove us to electric. We were looking at similar 2018/2020 estate cars, some V90's etc but given the price of the cars, plus the petrol usage per month it works out to be the same for the electric car, and less if i charge off the solar as much as possible so it was a no brainer.
