Power and handling can be dealt with quite easily. The looks are an acquired taste, but they're rapidly becoming an established favourite on the "retro" scene - a lot of people of my generation remember them from their childhood! They're also one of the last small RWD cars.

I now know of at least two 300s which have sold for £2k+ in recent times...so it's not so out of the question.

Aside from the price, I can't agree. What I love about the 340 is the space under the bonnet. Most things are accessible, you can do most of the servicing without having to remove anything and the maintenance is a doddle.

Handling - not bad for a car of its era. Fun on ice... Rugged! I had a car run up the back of ours on the M4. Said car was smashed in at the front. Ours needed a bumper straightening.

On LPG, ours is the cheapest car to drive by a long chalk.

Having said that, my son hates our 340. But then he likes Jeremy Clarkson.

I'm sure someone else will be just as nostalgic about it and buy. The asking price is a little on the high side i think.

Watching with interest.

Jeremy would probably quite like my car! I agree they're far too tame out of the box.

Sounds like a perfect reason to burn it...

Mine handles horribly, it's a 340, it's what they do.

If we manage to get this rumour flowing properly like it did for the first 15 years, maybe less of them will get drifted into armco...

True. At least you choose more creative objects to slide yours into ;)

Its the tyres ! decent set transform it .. they do roll a little too much but nothing wrong with the roadholding at all , not a lot can keep up with my B14 along the beautiful windy A466 from chepstow to Bigswier :-) what exactly is wrong with yours ? i would take a guess and say you dont have a premium tyre ?

foggyjames Aug 23rd, 2011 18:34

I think Chris was trying to convince people to keep their hands off them by telling them they handle badly! Chris' car has some nice tyres, but is sprung a bit too lightly for "fast road" use. He claims this is exactly what he wants for road rallying...

My 343 handles horribly at the moment (grip is good, but handling, i.e. control on the limit, is nasty) due to badly worn shocks all-round. I recently swapped the original (81) struts for ones from an 88 GLT. Those are better, but still shockingly(!) bad.

cheers

James
