split in the big (about 50mm diameter) flexible rubber hose betwen the outlet of the intercooler and the engine.... had it on a V40 and was a pig to change.....could also be the one going in to the intercooler

+1 more for split in intercooler hose.
|
it can be intercooler hose, some people referring part number 32222272 that fails. (right side)
Or better check also other hoses, 32222271 and 32222269 usually in some time after hissing sound there can be check engine sign on dashboard. |

Initially I thought it might be a Turbo hose. I had a Turbo hose replaced 2 years ago. And yes it was a similar noise, however this new one has also a mechanical component to it. |

I will try and have a look. I find it difficult to find images of the 2 litre D5 engine on the net. Does anybody has a source please so that I can orientate my-self? Many thanks. |
Update
Took the XC90 back to Volvo Waylands in Bristol.
This time they identified the cause of the engine noise: -Both turbochargers leaking, new turbos required £4000 incl. labour/ Vat -EGR pipe split £140 And that on a car which has just 86k miles on the clock! |
Blimey.
I would ring an independent and get them to quote with a bill that large. |

Were really the turbos the main problem? I have a very very simmilar noise on my V90 (2017 - D3) around 2000-2500 rpm (only when I drive = under load at cca 3/4 throttle). I notice this noise only when it is cold outside, when engine is cold. After a few minute driving ist this noise away. Or it is not hearable. I have thought, that it is a small leakage on exhaust manifold. (I havent checked it yet...) But now I am scaryied. |
