You have my leave to suggest it to Volvo UK.
All proceeds to go to charity.

Default Diesel particulate filter and rising oil levels discussion

There are a number of threads scattered around the various boards for the models affected and it has been suggested to keep the discussion here as the issue is particular to the engines and not the cars.

All the other discussions are indexed in that thread and can be linked to from there to read the previous discussions. If you know of any other discussions let me know and I will add them to the list.

Just one question on this topic.
You said 'If you do NOT take the car for a high rev run (drop to a low gear or use 'L' if automatic to keep speed down), when the soot box is about 90% full, the engine will go into limp home mode and you are in for a service visit.'
Is not it possible to do the regeneration automatically on motorway with a high rev run then? Once the car gets in limp home mode does the softwer still allow to start regeneration or I had better go to a volvo dealer shop.

you get a message first which indicates you must go for a run to allow regeneration , if you ignore this , the message " SOOT FILTER FULL" comes up and it goes into limp mode and then the dealer has to do a forced regeneration which takes about 45 mins ...

According to my user manual, "SOOT FILTER FULL" is the first message, at 80% full, and the situation is still recoverable if you immediately take the car for a fast drive to clear the filter, to quote the manual, 'preferably on a main road or motorway'

The user manual doesn't specify what happens if you ignore "SOOT FILTER FULL", or you don't have easy access to a main road or a motorway. I understand you subsequently get a second message, something like "ENGINE SERVICE REQUIRED" and limp-home mode commences, at which point you won't be able to clear the filter yourself, you must get it to a dealer.

Default Soot filter (DPF) full and immediate limp mode

Yesterday, after having driven on the highway for 600miles, I got a new tank of diesel and went into the mountains (France). I floored it to overtake someone and it immediately went into limp mode with the error DFP full or soor filter full. Error was in dutch.
Seems odd that it was anywhere near full after that long strech on the highway though.

Beeing in France, in the mountains, far away from a dealer (or highway) doesn't help either.

Disconnecting the battery helps, for a while, untill I floor it, then it's back to soot filter full and immediate limp mode.

Could it be bad diesel (possibly combined with my Rica sports tune)?

It's a manual 2.4d from Sept 2007 (so euro4) with the abovementioned rica sports tune (250hp etc).

really hoping for a simple solution. E.g someone who had this problem due to bad fuel.
I will take it out and try to keep the revs high for a while. But too high and it jumps into limp mode again.

I'm at a campsite, so looking for broken hoses (or IC) is not that easy. I'll try anyway.

Hope someone can provide some help/ideas/mental comfort :-)

Oh, nearly forgot. I had the MAF sensor replaced 3 days ago as my mileage is really bad. Could that be related? Still strikes me as odd because it worked during the 1st 600 miles.
MPG still sucks btw. on the highway yesterday my all time best 37mpg. Normally its 34 or worse.

Cheers,

Janis

Hi Janis

I can see from your posts that your car hasn't been running right for some time and I think that's whats causing the problems your having with the DPF. I think the other problems need sorting out to cure the DPF issue. (Easier said than done of course)

Did you get the RICA remap done when the engine was running OK? They don't recomend you get one unless it is.

Look at what point you blocked up the EGR. When you found the air filter full of leaves etc. so you can try and pinpoint the cause. As you well know, your MPG is all wrong. Look back and see if you can identify when the problem started, it might give you some clues.

Default back to original

I've ordered RICA isoftloader.

First thing I'll do is get back to original SW and test the car.

2day I drove to the mountains for 40 minutes in 2nd gear, so between 3000 and 4200rpm. That must have cleaned out the DPF.

Next, I'll be on the lookout for some premium diesel. If that doens't work I'll put in my old MAF.

If that doens't work, I'll have to look for a dealer. But for now, if I do NOT floor it, it's ok.

Fingers crossed

If your IC is OK (no clouds of exhaust soot on acceleration, or oil leaking from beneath it), then it might have pointed to an induction flow restriction - which were it not for the car's youth, might have been down to a mushy turbo inlet pipe.

But of course, there are other possible causes of airway constriction, which you should have a look for.
Starting right from the front end (airfilter-box inlet duct), I'd be inclined to check for any kind of mobile blockage.
May or may not be the cause of your woes, but it is a free means of eliminating another possibility from the frame.

Oh, and once you're past the turbo-charger, you'll need to ensure you do up the induction pipe jubilees very securely - they're under a good deal of pressure.
