Engine cutting out
Hi all,
Have been reading the forums regularly but first question I've asked. I have a 03 V40 1.9D (115 bhp) that has done 195,000 miles. It has gradually developed an intermittant habit of cutting out when approaching junctions/traffic lights or not wanting to rev when pulling away again. Sometimes when idling the idle speed will drop or stall. When the car was in the dealers for a service about 20K miles ago they replaced the fuel filter, didn't make much difference. At the next service I again asked them to look at the problem, but it did not play up at all while they had it (it is after all "intermittent") and they could not find any fault codes logged. It has very occasionally now cut out while cruising at about 50mph and have had to pull in, switch off and restart. When it cuts out it always restarts instantly, so i'm not thinking fuel starvation or drawing air somewhere (maybe wrong here). Thought I would pose the question on here before I take it along to the diesel specialists. Many thanks in advance. Ian |

Hi Ian,
I had a very similar problem with my 2003 1.9D back in 2009. In particular, I had exactly the symptoms you describe here: Quote:
My experience with the main stealer was very similar, change fuel filter, some ambiguous codes. I gave up on that. I happened to mention my problems to a Mitsubishi mechanic that I know well. He suggested that the 1.9D is shared with the Mitsubishi Carisma and that in the Carisma, a cut off solenoid on the fuel line fails leading the engine to cut out. He replaced the solenoid with one from a Carisma and I've had absolutely no problems since. I know the above wouldn't be recommended in the service manual, but it worked for me, and might solve your problem - I'm sure the original Volvo part would work the same. |

Re: Engine cutting out
Thanks for that. A useful bit of info. Only difference seems to be mine has cut out while moving.
Any one any other suggestions? It is taking the edge off what I feel is the best car I have ever owned. |

Hi, When working on my V40 I took the battery out quite a few times and put it back in when i needed to move the car so i just placed the connectors on loose. The same thing was happening to me, i checked to connectors but were still attached and it still cut out. i've tightened them now and it's fine! take a wire brush to your connectors! may help!

Sounds like air in the line or dodgy injector. I had this when I had an injector on the way out.

My car had the same problem, it could cut out when parking, when turning on full lock slowly or even coasting at speed to a junctuon if i stood on the clutch pedal. I was ready to almost bin the car. I tried cleaning the Idle control valve. It took me all of 15 mins. Its only a couple screws...and its never happened since. Best 15 spent workin on a car in my life!

Sorted
Hi all,
Just to complete the story, Took the car to a diesel specialist who checked the fault codes and found one relating to the fuel pressure regulator, so after monitoring the fuel pressure live data and checking wiring he replaced the fuel regulator. I have done a fair few miles over the last 2 weekends and have had no further trouble so seems to have done the trick. |
