S40 Aerial (electric/automatic?)
Hi and thanks for looking,
i have today bought my 1998 S40 and the guy in the garage has installed a jvc cd player but it wont pick up the radio as the aerial doesnt 'go up' it is just sitting in the fully retracted down position. i am guessing that it is electric and that it should 'go up' automatically when the ignition is on? please correct me if im wrong as i am new to volvo's i could get the pliers out to try and get the aerial up but im hoping for some advice first, Thanks, Cahal |

S40 Aerial (electric/automatic?)
HI cahalowen
I have fitted an electric aerial to my 1997 s40, the aerial extends when my radio/cd player is on (ignition position 1 onwards) and retracts when the radio/cd player is turned off regardless of ignition positition (except 0 obviously) so that covers when yours should extend and retract. As for your jvc radio/cd player, i'm affraid I can't advise you as I have only ever had a Volvo head unit in my car and I would hate to speculate sorry. I hope this is of some use to you. I had this problem when I changed from one pioneer after market stereo to another pioneer stereo the first one worked the arial the second didn't, on further research found that the second stereo had a separate wire for the electric arial in its harness and this need to be wired to the relevant wire on the cars loom, I just never bothered as I never really listened to the radio, so it might be the same for your headunit look at the wiring diagram for your Head unit, or see if there's a spare unused wire in the harness.

thanks for the reply, did you fit the electic aerial or did it come as standard? mine is an SE and most things seems electrical so i guess the aerial would be, my previous car was a 106 so all this stuff is very new to me, for some reason the volvo head unit is gone and im stuck with ths pretty poor jvc stereo and the speakers seem pretty poor too but thats a whole new topic i guess, Cheers Cahal |

thanks for the info, this sounds like it could be the problem, the jvc stereo was literally just thrown in so maybe he hasnt wired the stereo up right do you think? so at least i know that the aerial should pop up automatically then? i really want the aerial to be in working order and i do intend to buy a new stereo and speaker set for it, will the majority of the new stereo's in halfords etc work with the aerial and make it go up and down etc do you know? Cheers, Cahal |

i will get the auto electrician to install the stereo/new speakers so will ask him to look at the aerial too then, as long as the wire is there then hopefully isnt a big job, ive played with the aerial and is doesnt seem jammed so must be the fact it isnt wired up correctly, can get any radio at all as it is, Also when i think it another annoying thing is that the radio/cd player stays on even when the key is taken out of the ignition i know this will result in a flat battery at some point as ill forget to turn it off, is this the case with volvo's or is the the way its wired up again? Thanks, Cahal |

thats not how it is factory
the radio feed is ignition switched so goes on/off with the ign. as yours seems to be On/off with the switch on the radio it seems like a Constant live has been used to power it. as you say not recomended unless you like flat bats. my JVC head unit switches the ariel up/down , i got the correct ISO=volvo s40 adapter for mine, got the JVC > iso lead , chopped the ISO connectors off the end of the jvc, end of the iso adapter, solder n heat shrunk all the wires together correctly, (didnt want piles n more adapter connectors behind the thing, due to other stuff going in there as well) up/down on the switch on/off of the radio, which is set to "on" and comes on/off with the ignition. does sound like your plan to "auto sparks" it isnt a bad one,,
