So does this only affect the Euro IV engines... or is it the same for the Euro III?

DPF problems, several similar threads across the forums all with a lot of the same contributers, can we have a poll of people who think their D5's have this issue, so we can guage how wide an issue this may actually be (assuming the D5 owners that dont have a problem vote!)

No DPF on EuroIII, so no problems.

check my oil level again. Slightly below MAX. Seems pretty stable. Might have panicked a bit on that one.

- Also read that only Mazda and Volvo inject additional fuel in DPF... is that true?
- when were those DPF introduced? Why is the oil rising issue only starting recently?
- Monitored my journey on motorway today... with constant traffic, impossible to keep the car above 2000 RPM for 20 minutes... does it mean regeneration failed? We need more info on those DPF. Volvo users manual is only one page and very vague.

slip it into manual 60 - 70 in fourth will be around 3000 revs but others on this subject think 2000 is enough. If your oil level is stable that is good news hope it stays that way for you, good luck

I am not going to drive in 4th at 3,000 + RPM for 20 minutes... but this is back to what I said. Can we more information on how the DPF works? Nobody seems to know... and the dealer probably know the least.

Default Diesel particulate filter and rising oil levels discussion

There are a number of threads scattered around the various boards for the models affected and it has been suggested to keep the discussion here as the issue is particular to the engines and not the cars.

All the other discussions are indexed in that thread and can be linked to from there to read the previous discussions. If you know of any other discussions let me know and I will add them to the list.

All manufacturers of euro IV compliant dpf diesels have regeneration problems if :-

1]the car runs on cheap diesel :- use a low particulate diesel such as shell v-power and Bp Ultimate to eradicate problems

2] If the car is used on short runs and the revs rarely go above 2500, Run the car in lower gear with revs of 3500 for twenty mins to clear DPF of soot once every 400 miles.

3] A driving style which is gentle and pedestrian is not good for DPF cars. Give it some welly and apparently the engines loves it.(I drive like a granny so this one is hard for me)

I personally have had no problems but I use shell V-power diesel now as it appears to be worth the extra cost. Car runs quieter and the DPF has not regenerated since using it.Mpg seems to be 1.5 mpg better but early days yet! (placebo effect I hear you say)

shell V-power also has added Liquified gas rather than bio diesel.Bio diesel is supposed to be the cause of oil levels rising in cars fitted with DPF as it gets into the sump during regeneration and does not evaporate.

Default Nightmare!!

hi all. These posts are very interesting and I need some help/advice....
We had our 59 xc90 serviced recently and two days later we had it recalled for an issue with the power steering hose. We've had no trouble in the 3 years we've owned this. We then had the soot filter alarm chaos we now seem to be in.
We took it to a garage who replaced the pressure sensor; fault returned.
We were put in touch with a Dpf specialist who said the sensor was faulty. He identified it as an after market part, it had the part numbers Dremmeld off.
We replaced this again and then had the fault back.
We then took the car to a local 'Volvo' specialist. They said it was the sensor. We reluctantly agreed and paid another sum of money to get it replaced.
Fault again returned. We took it back to the Volvo specialist who told us that the Dpf needs replacing.
I don't know who to believe. We love the car but it's costing us a packet with no clear way forward. Can I get your thoughts please...........
